Express Invoice from NCH Software provides a desktop platform where you can manage your customers, create quotes, send invoices and process payments. This billing and invoice software, while not as modern and up to date as other services we reviewed, is intuitive and walks you through each step. Some processes, such as setting up your email, show that this software lacks the convenient features of newer software. However, it is easy to navigate the platform and complete tasks.
When initially setting up your company, you need only add the name. You can also add the address and contact information at that time if you wish. This software supports multiple businesses, though each works independently rather than using a doing-business-as setup. You can edit any information you enter or do not enter later in the settings. The homepage of the software lays out your options in a flow chart, starting with adding customers to creating invoices to processing payments. You can add your customers before you create your invoices or as you create them, and your customers' information will be saved in your customer list. You can also add items or services as you're creating invoices; however, that information does not save into your items list, so you must add it before or after if you wish to save information for products or services.
When editing the look of your invoices, you can choose from 12 different templates and then customize them. You can adjust the color scheme, choose from three fonts, add a border and change the columns displayed, among other options and embellishments. After creating the invoice, you can set it to recur and print, save, or email it. While entering the customer's email is simple, setting up your email is an outdated process, requiring server and login information for most email providers. We were unsuccessful at setting up our Gmail account. The best invoicing software programs simply require your email address and are much easier to set up in this respect. You have the option of saving invoices as PDFs, which you can email outside of the program as well.
When you receive payment, you apply it to a customer's account rather than a specific invoice. If the customer has more than one open invoice, the amount applies to the oldest invoice first. This billing software allows you to set up a credit card gateway through Authorize.net, eWAY or PayPal so you can process credit cards within the program. If a customer's invoice becomes overdue, you can set this program to send out automatic email reminders and add a late fee if you choose.
The software provides an in-program link to an online guide with steps to complete tasks. You can download that document as a PDF as well. If you wish to get in contact with a customer service representative, you can fill out a form on the website to have someone contact you. While telephone support is available, you must be a platinum support customer to use it, which requires an extra fee.
While Express Invoice is not new software, nor does it offer impressive additional features, it is a solid service that provides an intuitive desktop platform where you can manage your customers, billing and invoices. You can email invoices to your customers, though the process to set up your email is outdated and more difficult than it is with newer services. Other features stand out as being behind the times as well, although its features for billing and invoicing are adequate, especially if you like simple billing software on a traditional desktop platform.
