WinEst Review

PROS / This building estimator can integrate with every RS Means database.

CONS / WinEst requires you to export your scopes into Excel rather than supporting them in the program.

VERDICT / When WinEst includes a feature, the company makes sure it's very well done. However, the software doesn't include enough features to launch it into our top three picks.

WinEst is a well-organized estimating tool for small to medium-sized construction companies. This commercial construction estimating software enables you to craft and manage project estimates with a good deal of proficiency. It integrates well with popular third-party programs, such as Microsoft Project and Primavera. The interface is modern and flows intuitively, using a design that is similar to Microsoft Excel. It also connects to every RS Means database, so you always have the most up-to-date pricing for labor and materials in your service area. While it makes a well-deserved appearance on our list of the best commercial bidding software, it's missing some features.

As with all software, the first thing you notice is the user interface. A lackluster interface can spell certain death for a product if it looks out of date or is clunky or unintuitive. Fortunately, WinEst has graphics and icons that are crisp and clear, and the work has good flow. It also includes most of the estimating tools we looked for while reviewing construction estimating software. This includes digital takeoffs, super assemblies, and the ability to modify items to create customized price books and final proposals.

This program lets you import CAD design and interact with them as part of the estimating process. This adds to the ease of use of this software. It also has mobile capabilities so you can address changes to your bid on the spot rather than waiting to return back to the office.

The one feature that isn't directly supported but WinEst are scopes. You do, however, have the ability to export the necessary data from WinEst into an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of and refer to there. This is a little inconvenient compared to other bidding programs on our review that allow you to keep track of this information in the program itself.

As far as integration goes, WinEst lacks the ability to connect with some important business programs. It doesn't include scheduling tools in the program, nor does it integrate with third-party scheduling software. It also doesn't integrate with contract manager or CRM software. WinEst does create files that are compatible with nearly every program management application on the market.

Summary

There is a lot to like about WinEst. It remains true to the estimating portion of commercial construction software and fulfills those tasks admirably. It lacks some features, which kept it out of award-winning territory, but it compliments third-party program management software well to pick up the slack.
