With nearly 40 percent of online consumers shopping via mobile devices, it’s important to have an eCommerce software that rocks on smartphones and tablets. BigCommerce excelled in the mobile checkout process, making it an excellent choice. However, some features other programs offer with their basic programs, BigCommerce charges extra for or offers only in higher-tier programs.

BigCommerce has a limited number of unique templates, unless you wish to purchase one, but you can make changes to the template colors and style. The editing tools were a mixed bag – some of our testers had an easy time manipulating images and text, but some did not find these editors intuitive. None of the other eCommerce software gave any of our testers as much trouble, so it’s a good idea to play with the trial and see if the back-end processes make sense to you. Comprehensive product management allows you to add unlimited products and images.

The plan we reviewed, which was the Plus plan, has unlimited storage and bandwidth, but not all plans offer this. The built-in blog function means you can blog easily from the administration panel, and it appears with the same design as your store without extra work.

This eCommerce software handles Amazon and eBay integration. Another useful feature not found in many eCommerce solutions, even those receiving top reviews, is the live chat feature for your customers. More and more, customers prefer a chat room conversation to a phone call.

The service operates on a content delivery network, which means your store uploads more quickly than those whose eCommerce website employs a single central server. While this might only cut out seconds or less when pulling up large files or videos, it could mean the difference between an engaged customer and one who clicks away. This eCommerce software displays well on both mobile and desktop solutions, earning it the highest marks for customer experience.

However, BigCommerce falls short in our Back Office and Security rating because so many of these features cost extra or are only available with more expensive plans. Most of the eCommerce programs we examined offer these as standard parts of their packages. For example, it has a built-in point-of-sale system to let you manage your brick-and-mortar store on the same program, but it operates through Square, restricting the payment gateway to Square for POS transactions. The SSL certificate costs extra, although BigCommerce offers 256-bit protection. Fraud detection is available only at the Pro account level and above.
