PROS / You can schedule emails to deliver according to local time zones.
CONS / The theme editor, image editor and sign-up form editors have fewer features than other email marketing software applications we tested.
VERDICT / GetResponse is an easy-to-use email-creation program with a good selection of templates and great sending tools. A few of the editors lacked features compared to other email marketing software applications we reviewed.
The GetResponse email marketing software offers a modern interface with easy-to-use tools. The email template-building portion of this online marketing software is not as feature-filled as others we tested, but the contact section offers customized contact fields, and the email sending tools lets you dictate the exact time your emails are delivered and adapts to the local time zone. Thus, you can create professional newsletters and advertisements and get them to the best part of your audience at the optimum time for them.
GetResponse allows you to load contacts in a number of ways. You can add them one by one, copy and paste them, or upload them from one of several file types. You can also import them from a wide range of other services, including Google Docs, Salesforce, Zendesk and Highrise, among others. You can make a sign-up form, but we could not find an option to make it appear as a pop-up on your website. Therefore, you'll have to put it on your webpage.
You can also create a landing page. Landing pages are specific websites that contain specific information and a call to action, such as registering for a newsletter. GetResponse lets you create these yourself and will let you include videos.
GetResponse supplies you with hundreds of templates and over 1,000 stock images. We didn't find the templates as customizable as those we saw with other newsletter software we tested, but they are still easy to work with. The text and image editors are basic and easy to understand. The editor lacked some advanced features, such as pre-programmed font styles, and we had some problems with placing and resizing images. You have the option to preview the newsletter in mobile or desktop view.
This service facilitates autoresponders so that you can automatically send follow-up emails to those who subscribe to your list. While it does not create segments per se, it does let you search and flag subscribers by specific contact fields and send only to those individuals. Thus, it gives you the ability to send out seasonal newsletters and birthday discounts automatically based on the information that users signed up with.
One issue with email marketing is sending your message to the person at the optimum time. Most email software lets you set a time to send but only in a single time zone. Thus, you have to guess at the best time to reach most of your customers. GetResponse, however, not only can recommend the best time to send based on your industry, but it also lets you set the emails to arrive at that subscriber's personal time zone. This is a great advantage if you have customers across the nation or around the world.
We did have problems with the newsletter we created showing up in Gmail. Our test newsletter did not make it past Gmail's spam filter, not even to the promotions folder. This was an issue with other online marketing software we tested.
GetResponse begins with a tutorial to get you acquainted with the system. It has a support section and live chat, but no pop-ups to explain the individual functions.
The GetResponse approach to email marketing is clever and well suited to beginning marketers. We had minor issues with the image editing but were impressed with the sending features, especially the local time zone scheduling. While you may want to explore other options if a majority on your list use Gmail, it's otherwise a great service, especially for gathering and reaching subscribers.
