Pros / National Bankcard offers the most affordable EMV-ready terminal and has some of the lowest monthly fees in our review.
Cons / Customer service may be reluctant to quote you interchange-plus pricing.
Verdict / National Bankcard has competitive costs and low fees. It's a particularly good processing option if you prefer a tiered-pricing plan.
National Bankcard is a credit card processing company that offers competitive rates, low fees and quick account setup. This processor serves businesses of all sizes, from very small businesses up to large chains, such as Shell Gas and Comfort Inn.
This credit card processor offers both interchange-plus and tiered pricing rates. While the interchange-plus rates are better than average, the tiered rate is very good, especially the 0.25% rate for qualified debit cards, which is the lowest of any processor we reviewed. Although National Bankcard prefers to quote tiered pricing, it allows you to switch between the two pricing plans. National Bankcard provides EMV-ready terminals to its merchants at the lowest price in our review.
National Bankcard also has one of the lowest regular monthly fees at $5, and its other fees, such as its PCI-compliance fee of $99 and its monthly minimum of $25, fall in line with the industry averages. The monthly minimum is calculated from the processing costs, but National Bankcard might be willing to lower the minimum in your first few months of business.
One drawback of this processor is its lack of transparency, in particular, the customer service reps weren't as consistent with some of the information that they provided to our testers when we called – we had to specifically ask for interchange-plus pricing. However, National Bankcard posts its tiered pricing and fees online, which is more than most processors post on their websites, and this information can give you a clear idea of the costs you can expect to pay before you call.
National Bankcard has exceptionally quick setup times and can often get your account started the same day you apply. Documents can be signed electronically, which speeds up the process. There is no lengthy contract required, which means that you can sign up for month-to-month service and won't have to pay any early termination fees if you decide to cancel your account and switch to another processor. After you begin processing, this processor can clear your account as quickly as the next business day.
When we contacted National Bankcard, we found the customer service to be knowledgeable and helpful. Our contact wasn't as forthcoming with information about interchange-plus pricing as many of the other processors we reviewed. When contacting processors, you may have to prod them for information they may not be eager to provide. If you sign up for an account with National Bankcard, you are assigned an account rep. The rep is your direct contact and can run an analysis of your business after a few months to see if he or she can better optimize your rates.
This credit card processor offers competitive rates, both on interchange-plus and tiered pricing plans. You don't have to sign a long-term contract with National Bankcard, and it has one of the lowest monthly fees and the lowest cost for an EMV-ready terminal of any processor we reviewed.
