Pros / This service has low monthly fees and the lowest monthly minimum of the processors that have this requirement.

Cons / TransFirst's price for an EMV-ready terminal is higher than average.

Verdict / TransFirst has good rates and low monthly fees; it's a sensible option if you're looking for a direct processor.

TransFirst is a direct credit card processor, which means it handles the credit card transactions itself and doesn't resell another processor's services. It has reasonable costs and fees, and its service terms and setup times are average for the industry.

This credit card processor offers both tiered and interchange-plus pricing options. The interchange markup of 0.20% is better than average for the industry, but the $0.18 transaction fee is on the higher end of the processors we reviewed. The tiered rate is also on the higher end, with a 1.63% charge for qualified debit and credit cards.

TransFirst's monthly fee is only $5, which is one of the lowest fees we encountered. It also has a monthly minimum of $5, which is the lowest rate we found for processors that required monthly minimums. An annual PCI-compliance fee of $75.20 rounds out the fees, making TransFirst one of the least expensive options in regard to fees.

If you need to upgrade to an EMV-ready terminal, TransFirst can provide you with one. It charges $299 for the terminal, which is one of the higher prices we were quoted for terminals by the processors we reviewed.

TransFirst provides information about its fees, costs and terms on its website, which we consider an important aspect of a processor's openness and transparency. However, when our testers contacted TransFirst, we were unable to get a contract; TransFirst is one of just two processors that did not send us a contract to review.

When looking at credit card processors' setup and service terms, we rated them on whether they could set up accounts within two days and clear accounts within two days. TransFirst exceeds these industry benchmarks; it can clear the account and deposit your funds into your business bank account the next business day.

TransFirst's customer service reps were patient and knowledgeable, providing us with answers to our many questions. However, we did not receive a response when we filled out this processor's online form, so we recommend calling directly if you wish to learn more about this company. TransFirst does not provide its merchants with a dedicated account rep, which is a disadvantage, as many of its competitors offer personalized service.

TransFirst is a direct credit card processor and not a reseller, which can be advantageous if you prefer not to go through a middleman. Its processing costs are good, though higher than some of its competitors, and its monthly fees are among the lowest in our review.
