Editor's Note: This review has been removed from our side-by-side comparison because it no longer ranks as a top 10 product. The original review is below, but check out our current top 10 Merchant Services companies.

FreeAuthNet

FreeAuthNet offers merchant account services with higher costs and with only interchange-plus pricing. However, this may still be a solid choice if you need to process online and in-person orders as it does not require you to open a separate account with your internet merchant account.

Rates for the interchange-plus model through this service are a 0.20% markup plus a $0.25 fee per transaction. The latter rate is much higher than others on our lineup. This interchange-plus pricing is a good route if your business has low volume but high ticket sizes.

FreeAuthNet falls in the middle of the lineup in terms of its fees. For example, the monthly cost of $35 is one of the highest on the lineup. However, this monthly rate includes the PCI-compliance rate so you do not have to pay it separately. Furthermore, there is not a monthly minimum with this service.

One unique feature of this service is that you are not required to open a separate internet merchant account if you wish to process payments online. You simply pay your $19.99 portal setup fee and a monthly fee of $19.99 to continue processing both online and in-person payments from one account.

In another standout area, FreeAuthNet was one of the only merchant service providers to achieve a 100% during our transparency tests. Transparent and consistent information is one of the most important features for a merchant service to have.

Setting up an account with this merchant service can take longer than the industry average. It can take up to four days for your account to set up with FreeAuthNet, while the industry average is two days or less.

Like almost every other merchant service in the top ten, FreeAuthNet does not require you to sign up for a long-term contract and allows you to operate on a month-to-month basis. This gives you the freedom and flexibility to decide if this service it the best for your specific business.

Help and support was consistent and reliable in our testing. Service agents were attentive and knowledgeable. Additionally, they followed up with us if they did not have immediate answers to our questions.

Summary

This merchant service may be best for businesses that have low volume and high-average ticket prices. It is extremely transparent with its fees, costs and terms of service. It is a good choice if you know you will be processing both online and in-person transactions.
