PROS / This mobile credit card processing company doesn't charge a monthly fee.
CONS / You don't get a dedicated rep with this processor.
VERDICT / EMS+ has good rates and no fees, but it lacks quality customer service.
EMS+ is the mobile processing branch of Electronic Merchant Systems. Because this mobile credit card processor offers a flat rate on swiped transactions, no fees and easy setup, it receives the Top Ten Reviews Bronze Award. One of its drawbacks is inconsistent customer service, which can make it hard to get information.
This processor offers a free mobile magstripe swiper, but you have to purchase replacement or additional swipers for $10. EMS+ is currently developing a card reader that accepts EMV cards and NFC payments. This card reader will cost $95 dollars.
Like most mobile credit card processing companies, EMS+'s app gives you a variety of standard features, such as emailing receipts, capturing tips and tracking inventory.
Fees & Pricing
EMS+'s flat swiped rates are among the lowest of the mobile processors we reviewed. All swiped transactions have a 2.25 percent processing rate. This applies to all card types whether they're credit or debit cards, basic or rewards credit cards. If you need to key in a transaction, the processing rate is 3.50 percent along with an additional $0.15 fee per transaction.
You're not charged a monthly fee, nor do you have to meet a monthly minimum if you choose to use EMS+ as your processor. PCI compliance is included with your account, but you don't have to pay any additional fees for it.
It's important when choosing a mobile credit card processor to find one that's transparent and consistent with the information it provides. EMS+ posts its pricing and fee information online, but not its terms. The reps we spoke with provided us with consistent information that matched what was posted.
Setup & Service
EMS+ has a very simple application process, allowing you to sign up online and only requiring a few pieces of personal information. If your business isn't registered, you can use your Social Security number. EMS+ requires that you use its services for a business, so it may not be a good choice if you just want something you can use to accept cards at a garage sale.
You don't have to sign a contract with EMS+, and your account can be set up within 24 hours, though you have to wait for your mobile card reader to arrive unless you're willing to manually input your customers' card information and be charged the higher keyed-in rate. Once you've been approved and have started processing, your funds are deposited into your account within two business days.
If you need to contact customer service, EMS+ offers 24/7 phone support in addition to live chat. While EMS+'s customer service was helpful and knowledgeable, it didn't follow up with our testers and you don't have access to a dedicated account rep with this processor.
EMS+ has a simple flat rate that's one of the lowest of the processors we reviewed. In addition to good processing rates, it has a quick setup time and no monthly fees. Unresponsive customer service and an expensive EMV card reader that EMS+ hasn't yet released are a two of the drawbacks.
