When you engage Optimus to write your business plan, you begin with a one- to two-hour kickoff session to inform the writer about your business and answer questions about your goals for the plan. Unlike many other services we reviewed, Optimus doesn't send its clients a questionnaire to fill out; instead, it uses the kickoff session to gather the necessary information.

After receiving the first draft of your plan, you have up to six months to submit any revisions. This is one of the most generous revision periods offered by the services we reviewed. You can usually expect to receive a revised plan between two to three days.

As part of our review, we evaluated sample plans and graded them against a checklist based on industry best practices. Optimus scored a 90 percent, which represents a high-quality plan that includes market research, industry analysis and financial forecasting. The plan doesn't include a product differentiation section, which accounts for the 90 percent score.

One of the benefits of using a business plan service is that they have access to market research databases. A subscription to these databases can cost thousands of dollars. Optimus has subscriptions to IBISWorld, Bizminer and various other industry associations.

The average turnaround time to receive the first draft of a plan is between 10 to 15 business days. This is longer but is still an acceptable timeframe for a business plan. Yours may vary depending on the complexity of your plan. Costs range from $1,500 to $2,500, which is roughly average for the services we reviewed.

Optimus also offers a service where it will review your existing business plan and offer a critique and recommendations. This service costs between $500 to $800, and you can expect the review to take about a week. It doesn't offer any strategic-planning or management-consulting services, though it can help you connect with potential investors.
