Performance

The Base model of the HP Compaq 8000 Elite comes equipped with an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E8400 (3.00 GHz, 6 MB L2 cache, 1333 MHz FSB) processor. For business applications, this 4 core powerhouse is more than adequate. However, for those who require more strength, it can be upgraded all way up to the Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q9650 (3.00 GHz, 12 MB L2 cache, 1333 MHz FSB) and all the variations in between.

Memory & Storage

2GB of 1333MHz DDR3 memory should be adequate for most office tasks; however, upgrading to more RAM will ensure that applications run smoothly. The maximum allowed memory for 64 bit operating systems is 16GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM. The maximum memory allowed for 32 bit operating systems is 3GB. This restriction is due to system resource requirements.

The 250GB SATA Hard Drive provides plenty of storage space for office documents and other information. Upgrade options can expand the hard drive capacity to 1TB. The HP Compaq 8000 Elite enables users to protect their sensitive data with encryption via the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). The TPM limits the reading and changing of critical files, password protection, etc. A total of 10 high-speed USB ports add further functionality to this computer by making it easy to transfer documents to and from other devices.

Expansion Potential

Other hardware and software security features include: Drive Lock, RAID Configurations, HP ProtectTools Embedded Security Software, USB enable/disable (via BIOS), Optional USB Port Disable at factory (user configurable via BIOS), Removable Media Write/Boot Control, Power-On Password (via BIOS), Setup Password (via BIOS), Solenoid Hood Lock / Sensor, support for chassis padlocks and cable lock devices to name a few.

The LightScribe enabled 16X SATA SuperMulti LightScribe DVD+/-RW optical drive allows the user to laser-etch long lasting quality text and images directly onto compatible LightScribe CDs and DVDs. Once content is burned, the LightScribe disc is then turned over and reinserted into the drive, thus allowing you to burn a simple title or full blown art work onto the disc. The LightScribe feature only works with LightScribe compatible media.

The base model operating system is Windows XP Professional (available through downgrade rights from Genuine Windows 7 Professional). Many are reporting some confusion over what exactly this configuration offers and how to use it. When this configuration is selected, the box ships with Windows XP Professional installed with the purpose of preserving compatibility with older peripherals or software. Once booted, and all compatibility issues are identified and resolved an option is given to install Windows 7 Professional. Users are given a license to run one operating system or the other, not both!

Summary

The HP Compaq 8000 Elite Convertible Minitower PC has many security and functionality features that make it appealing to the business owner. It is equipped with more than adequate amounts of memory and processing power to get those deadline-driven projects completed. Upgrade options ensure that this machine will remain viable in the workplace for years to come.
