Editor's Note: This review has been removed from our side-by-side comparison because it no longer ranks as a top 10 product. The original review is below, but check out our current top 10 about Multimedia Computers here.
The Apple iMac is a quality multimedia computer compacted in a small all-in-one design. The display screen is incredibly sharp, boasting a maximum resolution of 2,560 x 1,440-pixels (27-inch model). This puts several multimedia PC’s to shame. Aesthetically, the iMac is everything you would want in a media center computer, but compared to the top of our lineup, this computer lacks in performance and features, which makes the Apple iMac tumble down our lineup ranks.
This media computer offers either a 21.5-inch or 27-inch display screen with full HD resolution. It also features LED backlighting, which enhances the images and design and provides ideal viewing for all your media. The Apple iMac is fairly compact when you consider the hardware is all behind the screen. The 27-inch model is incredibly slim, 20.3 inches tall and 25.6 inches wide. It weighs 21 pounds, which is light compared to several similar products. The Apple iMac is also Energy Star qualified and consumes only 205 watts of power during use.
The 27-inch Apple iMac features a 2.9GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor. You can upgrade your iMac to have a 3.4GHz i7 processor with turbo boosts up to 3.9GHz, but that is going to cost you a little extra coin. Even with 3.9GHz worth of processing speed, this multimedia computer can’t compete with the best home computer in our lineup. Even though there are other computers with better performance, the iMac processor, coupled with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 660M graphics card does more than enough to satisfy your multimedia needs.
Aside from the design features, this multimedia computer does not offer a wide selection of options. There are two thunderbolt ports and an SDXC card slot. Unfortunately, there are only four USB ports, which is quite a small number compared to several similar multimedia computers we reviewed. You can also buy thunderbolt to HDMI converters separately if you need an HDMI connection, which the iMac doesn’t feature.
There is 1TB of hard drive space included with this multimedia computer. This is plenty of room for your movies, music and photos. The base iMac model features 8GB of RAM, which is the same amount of memory you would find on other basic multimedia computers. Of course, you can upgrade your memory and storage if you feel the need, but any upgrade to your iMac is not cheap.
If you have any questions or concerns about this multimedia computer, you can contact a customer service representative through phone support or live chat. There is also a user forum located on the Apple website for additional assistance and feedback from users.
This is a solid media center computer with a wonderful design and good components. Unfortunately, there are other media center computers that offer more connectivity options and more horsepower than the iMac.
