The aptly named Slide & Negative Converter does just that: It converts your old 35mm slides and negatives to a digital format. The slide converter is also compatible with other formats like 110, 126 and Super 8 film. It has a 14-megapixel resolution, as well as useful manual and automatic options for adjusting exposure.

Overall, we think it ranks among the best slide to digital image converters currently available. That said, it's not the best option for people who need to have a large, clear image to check as they scan negatives through the machine.

Features and build

With on-screen language options in English, Japanese, French, Italian, German, Chinese and Spanish, users from around the world can use this lightweight and portable device. One of the major downsides of the device, however, is that it has no built-in internal storage, nor does it come with an SD card. You’ll have to buy a separate one, and the scanner won’t work until you have inserted an SD card.

In our tests, we found this device moderately easy to use. The converter has a small build, measuring 5 x 3.7 x 5.8 inches, and it weighs just 0.6 pounds. Its 2.4-inch screen lets you navigate a basic interface, and there are simple buttons on top of the device. The included film frames are well-made and easy to use, making it easy to convert your slides to a digital format.

It's a super-portable option for users, but the fact that it doesn't have a broad screen like the Wolverine Titan 8-in-1 converter might make it more fiddly to use. You won't be able to check whether or not your images have scanned correctly.

It comes with a cleaning brush, which can help you remove dust from dirty slides or film. Once you convert your images, you can connect the device to an LCD screen or TV via the TV-out jack. If you're not happy with the quality of the scan, you can always tidy up your images using some of the best photo editing software, too.

This slide to digital converter has a one-year limited warranty from the manufacturer. However, if you have a problem or question regarding the product, you can turn to the company’s FAQs page for answers before calling for help. The customer service team is available via email, as well.

Should I buy the Sharper Image Slide & Negative converter?

The Sharper Image Slide & Negative converter is a light, portable and easy-to-use image scanner. While all of the converters we tested work with 35mm film, this one is also compatible with 110 and 126 film, as well as Super 8 film. Despite not being able to process printed photos like the Plustek Z300 photo scanner, and being one of the priciest items in our comparison, this Sharper Image converter is worth your consideration for digitizing negatives and slides.
