The compact Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300i USB scanner is designed for desktop use in your office or home. This unit is larger and heavier than most portable scanners, but it has additional features, like a 10-sheet document feeder and duplex (double-sided) scan capability, that compensate for its larger size.
The Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300i has an optical resolution of 600 dpi, but it can produce lower- or higher-resolution images, 300 to 1,200 dpi, using software image processing. The USB scanner captures black-and-white, color or grayscale documents. Scanning speeds range from one page per minute for a high-resolution color scan to 24 pages per minute for a low-resolution black-and-white image. The ScanSnap S1300i can handle pages ranging in size from 1 x 1 to 8.5 x 14.1 inches. The unit's paper feed handles a maximum of 10 sheets of 20 lb. paper.
The ScanSnap is about 11 x 4 x 3 inches in size and weighs about 3 pounds. The scanner is compatible with both Windows (XP and newer) and Mac OS X (10.5 or newer), but some bundled software is only available for Windows. It needs an Intel-compatible computer with 2GB RAM and 2GB available drive space. Additional drive space is required for each of the bundled applications. This USB scanner can be powered by the included AC power adapter or a second USB cable connected to your computer. Using the dedicated AC power adapter allows for faster scanning.
To scan a document, you simply place it in the paper feed and press the scan button. Once your document has been scanned, the ScanSnap software automatically straightens and crops pages and lets you perform color correction and remove blank pages. You can then save the file as a PDF, JPG, Word or Excel file, send it directly to an attached printer or share it with direct export to cloud storage products such as Evernote, Google Docs or Salesforce CRM. If you're scanning business cards, optical character recognition software can automatically populate entries in the included CardMinder application. You can also share documents directly to a Wi-Fi connected tablet or smartphone using the free ScanSnap Connect application. If you're using this portable scanner with a Windows computer, you can use the included ScanSnap Organizer application to create searchable documents, select custom keywords in text or store files in a SharePoint content management system.
The Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300i is a capable USB scanner that comes with a selection of productivity and data management software. While this scanner is probably not ideal for travel, as it is somewhat heavier and bulkier than other portable scanners, it offers features such as a multipage document feed and duplex scanning.
