PROS / This drive's design is top-notch.
CONS / The lack of helpful software means fewer security features.
VERDICT / The Fantom G-Force3 is a great external hard drive if you don't want any pre-installed software – but it lacks the amenities that can come with that software.
Fantom Drives makes high-quality desktop external hard drives, and its G-Force3 line is impressive. Unfortunately, the Fantom G-Force3 is missing some of the features we like to see on the best external hard drives. For example, there is no preloaded software to speak of. While this may appeal to some, it leaves many users without easy access to security features and backup functionality. Still, the G-Force3's physical design is high-quality and built to last.
All you need to do in order to use the Fantom G-Force3 is plug it into any USB port on your computer. Once your computer has automatically installed the drivers for the G-Force3, you can start using it. That's all there is to it. You just start transferring files to the drive or access your operating system's built-in backup options. You'll need to use your operating system's software, because this external hard disk doesn't come with any.
The Fantom G-Force3 has a USB 3.0 interface, which gives you much faster transfer compared to USB 2.0. The external hard drive's enclosure is made of aluminum and has plenty of ventilation to keep the drive cool, even during long periods of use. This helps extend the lifetime of the external hard drive. With most electronics, the cooler a device runs, the longer its lifetime is likely to be. You can get the G-Force3 in models that range from 1TB to 4TB.
While the lack of pre-installed software is preferable for some, it leaves you without easy access to tools that ensure your data is backed up and safe. You have to rely on your operating system's tools in order to schedule backups, and you'll have to manually encrypt any data you don't want others to have easy access to. The G-Force3 does have a security lock on the back of the device, which allows you to lock it down to your desk, or just about anywhere.
What the Fantom G-Force3 doesn't have in software functionality, it mostly makes up for in design. It isn't the best desktop external hard drive you can get, but as far as design goes, it comes pretty close. If you want an easy option to back up your data and secure it, then you may want to look elsewhere. If you want a reliable storage option, then the Fantom G-Force3 is a solid bet.
