PROS / Its software is easy to use and can be programmed to run in hourly, daily and monthly increments.
CONS / Its plastic casing makes it susceptible to damage from accidental drops and mishandling.
VERDICT / The Seagate Backup Plus Slim's software makes it easy to use, but its external plastic housing ranks it below more rugged external hard drives for overall longevity.
The Seagate Backup Plus Slim external hard drive is available in a variety of storage capacities, ranging from 500GB to 2TB. Its included backup software lets you schedule automated data backups, but it lacks a few important security features that would boost its rank among the best external hard drives for PC.
Equipped with easy-to-use software that lets you mirror stored data to the cloud across a variety of cloud storage platforms – including Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive and Nero Cloud – the Seagate Backup Plus Slim is an affordable way to keep your digital files safe. The recognition time for the external hard drive, which is the time your computer takes to recognize it when you first plug it in via USB cable, is on the longer end of average at seven seconds.
Despite a user-friendly backup software dashboard, the hard drive lacks hardware- and software-based encryption. This means you can't secure the external hard drive with a password, which would be ideal for keeping prying eyes away from your personal documents.
Measuring 4.5 x 3 x 0.5 inches and weighing only 4.8 ounces, this hard drive is easy to stow away and highly portable. However, its plastic casing offers little protection against accidental damage, so it's not the best external hard drive for frequent travel or outdoor use that may expose it to the elements.
The external hard drive's warranty is good for two years, which isn't the shortest warranty of the drives we tested, but the standard is three years. You can reach support via email for troubleshooting or warranty issues, but there is no telephone support for Seagate. The robust online resources, including a FAQs page, gives you the chance to solve performance issues on your own.
The Seagate Backup Plus Slim is a lightweight and portable external hard drive, and you can use it in conjunction with backup software or with traditional click-and-drag methods. Its two-year warranty could be better, but it gives you plenty of time to identify manufacturer defects or electronic malfunctions. Its lack of strong protective casing and security encryption means it's not the best external hard drive for on-the-go needs.
