PROS / The Toshiba Canvio Connect II gets high marks for backup software and security encryption.
CONS / It lacks shock resistance and is encased in plastic, making it susceptible to damage.
VERDICT / This external hard drive is a fine choice if you can protect it from being bumped or jostled.
The Toshiba Canvio Connect II is a portable external hard drive for PC that connects to your computer via standard USB 3.0 cable and offers double the backup security through included cloud storage compatibility. Its lightweight design makes it easily portable, but it may not be the best choice if you’re looking for a rugged external hard drive.
Encased in plastic, the Toshiba Canvio Connect II weighs 8.1 ounces and measures 4.3 x 3 x 0.55 inches. Lightweight and slender, it’s a handy device that lets you back up your important data and carry it with you – but due to its plastic external casing, it is not as durable or rugged as other high-ranking external hard drives.
The Canvio Connect II has a recognition time of approximately 10 seconds. This is the length of time your computer takes to recognize the external hard drive when it’s plugged in via USB cable. This is 6.5 seconds longer than the fastest recognition time we measured, but it is certainly not unacceptable.
Equipped with pre-loaded backup software, this drive offers everything you need to keep your personal data locked away from prying eyes – including 256-bit AES encryption and the ability to set a password which will prevent unauthorized parties from accessing your information. The software also includes customizable automatic data backup, which you can schedule in hourly, daily or monthly increments. The software is easy to use and the process for automated backup requires a very little learning curve. It is also compatible with cloud backup, which allows you to access your data remotely.
It comes with a two-year limited manufacturer warranty, which is below the average of three years, but there are numerous channels through which you can contact technical support. These include email, phone and an online knowledgebase complete with FAQs for troubleshooting and general information on performing complex backup tasks.
The Toshiba Canvio Connect II portable external hard drive achieves high marks for its automated software and security, but it lacks drop protection and may be easily damaged if accidentally dropped. It’s easy enough to fit into a backpack or purse and includes robust support for getting help if you need it.
