Verbatim Store 'n' Go USB 3.0 Review

Author by

PROS / Backed by an extensive seven-year warranty, the Verbatim Store 'n' Go portable hard drive offers equally comprehensive customer support.

CONS / It lacks both hardware- and software-based encryption for data security.

VERDICT / The Verbatim Store 'n' Go is slender and portable with an excellent warranty, but it's missing some features that would make it a more durable and versatile hard drive.

Slender in design with a sleek exterior, the Verbatim Store 'n' Go is a compact and highly portable 1TB external hard drive. Its seven-year warranty is the best among all the external hard drives we reviewed, but its lack of a rugged exterior limits its portability.

The Verbatim Store 'n' Go plugs directly into your computer via a provided USB 3.0 micro-B cable. The USB 3.0 port and provided cable are reverse-compatible with the USB 2.0 ports you'd find on older computers.

The Verbatim comes with software that lets you schedule automated data backups to occur in hourly, daily or monthly increments. This is significantly more convenient than having to manually click and drag data that you want to back up. While this automatic backup is a good security feature to prevent you losing your data, the hard drive lacks password protection and hardware-based encryption, which are security measures you get with the best external hard drives. This means that anyone who accesses your external hard drive can also access your data.

Drop protection is nil on this hard drive. The Verbatim's sleek plastic exterior isn't likely to survive a drop like the most rugged external hard drives can. However, its small size makes it an easy fit in your pocket. It measures 4.5 x 3 x 0.5 inches and weighs only 5.4 ounces, so as long as you're careful not to drop it, it's a nicely portable external hard drive.

This external hard drive is available in models that range from 500GB to 2TB of storage. It comes with an extensive seven-year manufacturer warranty, which is the longest you can find on an external hard drive, and you can reach technical support via phone or email. There is also an online database and FAQs to answer questions about the hardware and software operation.

The Verbatim Store 'n' Go external hard drive is slender and lightweight enough to fit into your pocket and comfortably carry around, but it doesn't come with any physical protection against accidental drops or impact. To balance this out somewhat, its stellar seven-year warranty offers the best level of protection against malfunction and faulty workmanship, and it also comes with automatic backup software. However, its lack of password protection or hard drive encryption keeps your stored data less secure than it would be with the best external hard drives.
