OCZ Agility Review

PROS / OCZ offers great technical support for its solid-state drives.

CONS / The OCZ Agility is fast, but not quite as fast as other SSDs.

VERDICT / This is a great choice for a solid-state drive.

The OCZ Agility solid-state drive utilizes an Indilinx Everest controller with MLC flash component technology. The Indilinx Everest controller is optimized for high speeds, and this drive performs well because of it. Furthermore, this drive is RoHS compliant and has S.M.A.R.T. and TRIM support. This drive is also easy to install; while it is a 2.5-inch form factor drive, it comes with a 3.5-inch mounting kit, making it compatible with most machines.

The Indilinx Everest controller technology powering the OCZ Agility gives it high read and write speeds, both sequentially and randomly. This OCZ SSD can perform sequential reads at speeds up to 420MBps, and sequential writes up to 410MBps. In random write-speed tests, the OCZ Agility hit speeds of up to 85,000 input operations per second (IOPS). While these aren't the highest speeds we saw from a solid-state drive – and aren't even the highest speeds available from OCZ – they still measure up well next to the competition.

The OCZ Agility consumes only 2.5W of your computer's power during operation. Solid-state drives have a big advantage over traditional hard disk drives in that they consume so little power, and the Agility is no different. This solid-state drive has a lifespan of 1.25 million hours and shock resistance up to 1500G. Shock resistance is a standard feature of solid-state drives, which, unlike hard disk drives, are very unlikely to malfunction because of mechanical or electrical failure.

The capacity options available for the OCZ Agility will fit the demands of just about every potential SSD buyer. If you're looking for a solid-state drive to use primarily as a boot drive, you can opt for the 64GB option from OCZ. The company also carries 128 and 256GB models, and those who are looking to store and access large amounts of data can look into the 512GB model, although it comes with a significant price tag. Furthermore, although 512GB may seem like plenty, it fills up surprisingly quickly when you're dealing with HD video files and similar data.

If you need technical support when installing the Agility, OCZ has you covered. The company offers telephone and email support via the OCZ website, along with a community forum, a FAQs section and an online manual for all of the company's technology products. Furthermore, you can download any firmware or driver updates you may need directly from the source.

The OCZ Agility, driven by the Indilinx Everest controller, is a great choice for a solid-state drive. OCZ has excellent technical support and a community forum that is constantly on the lookout to address issues with the device and improve the end-user experience. While this isn't the fastest solid-state drive out there, it will handle your needs with ease and provide smooth performance and quick and easy access to your data.
