CONS / This solid-state drive does not come with a 3.5-inch mounting kit.

VERDICT / The Samsung 840 Series is a good choice for those who are looking to upgrade from an old hard disk drive.

The Samsung 840 Series solid-state drive will handle your storage needs with ease and give you huge boosts of speed while consuming very little of your computer's available power. This solid-state drive is RoHS compliant and has S.M.A.R.T. and TRIM support. The Samsung 840 Series SSD will please most speed freaks too.

A three-core Samsung MDX controller using toggle NAND flash components controls the Samsung 840 SSD. The MDX is a Samsung in-house creation; Samsung manufactures all of its own SSD hardware. The 840 is 2.5-inches, which may be a concern for many first-time buyers, as most computer builds have 3.5-inch mounting bays. You will need to buy a separate 3.5-inch mounting kit if this is the case with your computer. After doing so, installation of the Samsung 840 Series solid-state drive is quick and easy.

  1. Potential sequential read speeds

This SSD features a sequential read speed of up to 530MB/s, and a sequential write speed of up to 130MB/s. The sequential write speed on this solid-state drive is not particularly impressive, especially when compared to other competing drives. However, the random write speed – arguably the more important metric – can reach up to 85,000 input operations per second, or IOPS. Still, the Samsung 840 Series SSD performs poorly in sequential writing.

One of the biggest benefits to the Samsung 840 series solid-state drive is the amount of power it consumes. This device only uses 0.7W of power while operational, and a measly 0.08W when idling. It also provides the standard 1500G of shock resistance. Life expectancy for the Samsung 840 Series SSD is a solid 1.5 million hours, and the device is capable of seeking information in 0.1ms – another typical measurement for these devices.

There are a few capacity options available for the Samsung 840 series SSD. You can choose between 120, 250 or 500GB. This offering feels a bit limited, as many competing manufacturers offer capacity options smaller than 120GB for those looking to utilize their SSDs as a primary boot drive. 500GB is a decent size for the larger end, but it may not be enough if you're looking to store a lot of data on an SSD.

Samsung's help and support offerings are great. The company offers email and phone support options if you need to speak to a representative about your device. A helpful FAQs section addresses common concerns, along with a Community Q&A page, which serves as a forum for Samsung customers to discuss problems. You can also find firmware and software downloads and updates on the Samsung site.

The Samsung 840 Series solid-state drive performs well and won't take a toll on your computer's power supply. This device has a good life expectancy and meets all of the basic requirements for a top SSD. The lack of a mounting kit may prove problematic, and the drive's sequential write speeds could be better. Still, you won't go wrong choosing a Samsung 840 Series SSD for your computer.
