Cordless phones are complex electronics with several practical uses. From homes to small businesses, these devices are the preferred communications catalyst. DECT and DECT 6.0
The Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) technology is a standard used for devices that communicate via radio frequencies. You will find this technology primarily in cordless phones, though it can also be used for things like baby monitors and wireless networks. This technology is a standard in Europe, Australia and other areas, but it is still competing with older frequencies in the United States.

DECT originated in Europe as the Digital European Cordless Telephone in 1987. Since its inception, it has undergone several changes to its name and even a few adaptations of the technology itself. One such variation is the United States  application of the technology called DECT 6.0. This differs slightly from the European standard in the frequency range it uses; DECT uses the frequency band of 1880 MHz   1900 MHz while DECT 6.0 ranges from 1920 MHz   1930 MHz. This change occurred to ensure that the cordless phones did not receive interference from other devices using similar technology, like the aforementioned baby monitors.

Frequency Ranges: What Do They Mean?
Frequency ranges are used in this technology primarily to allow for multiple devices to utilize the same ranges and to permit frequency-hopping by the phones. The term  frequency  refers to the rate at which an electromagnetic wave oscillates. In the case of DECT and DECT 6.0, the waves oscillate at 1880-1900 MHz and 1920 MHz   1930 MHz, respectively. A tuner can hone in on a certain frequency and communicate with other devices, such as your handset, to allow the information through.

The Base Station s Role
The base station acts as a miniature broadcast antenna. It receives the calls that are placed through your landline and projects a radio signal at a frequency that the tuners in your device s handsets can interpret. If your device uses the DECT 6.0 technology, this means that your base will broadcast at 1920-1930 MHz. Each handset contains a radio tuner that communicates with the base station and interprets the signals, allowing you to pick up calls from any handset that is configured to talk with your base.

How Your Cordless Phone Evades Line Taps
The frequency ranges utilized by your base station, as described above, allow the device to evade unwanted eavesdropping by a process called  frequency hopping.  This means that the handset you are using and the base station will somewhat randomly switch frequencies, jumping from one line of communication to another. By doing this rapidly and randomly, your phone keeps your conversations private.
