Pros / It alerts you to the location of traffic cameras, which can help you avoid a speeding ticket.

Cons / It has no voice-activated navigation software.

Verdict / Though it's missing a couple important features, the Magellan RoadMate 6630T-LM has a variety of convenient features and good functionality for a decent price point.

The Magellan RoadMate 6630T-LM is a navigation GPS with lifetime map updates included in the purchase price. It comes preloaded with maps of North America. The GPS system is middle-of-the-road in terms of its features and ease of use, but it has a few unique and premium features to balance it out. However, it lacks voice-activated navigation – a feature touted by the best navigation GPS units in our comparison. This means you’ll have to manually go through menus and type in your destination.

The GPS system has standard navigation features, like landmark guidance, which enables the automated voice to give you directions based on landmarks, not just mileage. So, instead of saying, “In 500 feet, turn right,” the device will say something like, “Turn right at the Shell station in half a mile.” It also has lane assistance, which guides you into the correct lane ahead of each step with plenty of time. Speed limit alerts show you the speed limit of the road you’re driving on so you can abide by local traffic laws and avoid a ticket. The built-in traffic camera detector helps you locate speed-checking devices to help you avoid a potential ticket.

The RoadMate 6630T-LM also has rerouting capabilities, so it can recalculate your best route options after your missed turn. With 7 million included points of interest, including gas stations, stores and restaurants, you can easily find your favorite stores in the area. The built-in dash cam records video in 1920 x 1080 resolution and also helps warn you against forward collisions.

The unit uses a capacitive touchscreen display, which is more responsive and user-friendly than lower-end resistive screens. It has a 5-inch display, which is an average size for a vehicle GPS, and it can show you your location along with the date and time. It lets you program your favorite locations into its OneTouch menu, and you can set reminders for driving breaks or have it search for the best parking lot in an area.

Summary

The Magellan RoadMate 6630T-LM is a feature-rich GPS, especially given its low price point in comparison with other devices in our review. Though lacking a few important features, like voice-activated navigation, it’s good at guiding you to your destination and has some extra functionality included.
