With a 42x optical zoom, the Nikon Coolpix P Series 3D camera easily takes the cake for farthest zoom. That's what you're paying for when you buy this camera. This is an excellent feature, especially coupled with the 18.1MP resolution and built-in stabilization, but high zoom feels a little wonky when you're creating 3D photographs. After all, that mountain in the distance looks flat, for all intents and purposes, even to those of us with two eyes. In other words, extreme close-ups and 3D shots do not mix well.
That said, this is a superior camera for some uses, so if 3D photos are just something you would like to play around with rather than your main focus, this is a worthy contender. With the focal range of 24 to 1,000 mm, you can bring almost any shot into focus. You can shoot 1080p video at up to 60 fps. It can handle burst shots of up to seven frames a second. The built-in GPS can tag the location of your shots, and the 3.2-inch LCD screen is larger than most competitors' screens.
The P Series' three HDR modes are excellent at collecting high detail in a shot by forming a composite of three images, taking the best contrast from each. To take 3D shots with this camera, you take the first shot, then pan sideways until the camera automatically takes the second shot. As long as your hand is steady and no objects in the composition are moving, this does the job nicely. It isn't as good at taking 3D shots as cameras that have dual lenses, though, or even those that take multiple shots and then select the best contenders out of them.
The 3D mode is buried under the scene menu, but it isn't too hard to find. The same does not go for ISO, autofocus and white balance, which are buried even deeper in the menus. There is, at least, a function button that you can assign to your most used of these settings so that you don't have to dig for them every time.
The Nikon Coolpix P Series is a superzoom 3D camera that is excellent for capturing extreme close-up shots of faraway objects. If your primary concern is 3D photos, however, there are more specialized 3D cameras that will better serve your needs.
