Sony Cyber-shot WX Series Review

Author by

The Sony Cyber-Shot WX Series is a pocket-size 3D digital camera that has an impressive 20x optical zoom and an 18MP Exmor R CMOS sensor. It can capture about 500 shots on a full battery charge. It shoots videos at full 1080p HD and can capture a still shot right in the middle of taking a movie. Because the camera is so compact, it has no viewfinder, only a 3-inch LCD screen. It's available in black, red or white.

The WX Series has an excellent steady-shot stabilizer that keeps you from taking blurry shots when you don't have a tripod handy. Its focal range is 25 to 500 mm. At 5.9 ounces, this is one of the lightest 3D digital cameras. With the high maximum resolution, it packs a punch in a small package. Perhaps best of all, this digital camera has a dedicated 3D mode that you can select from the mode dial, sparing you the time-consuming effort of digging through scene menus when the perfect shot presents itself.

The camera's 3D mode works by having you pan to the right after taking the first picture; it takes a second picture at the right moment and merges them to form the 3D image. These images are viewable only on a compatible device such as a 3D television or photo frame, but you can look at the 2D versions on the LCD screen. Since the photos are not taken simultaneously as they would be with a dual-lens camera, any movement within the composition degrades the quality of the 3D image.

This camera has built-in Wi-Fi, so it can upload images directly. You can also connect it to your smartphone and remotely take pictures. The settings on this camera are clearly arranged for the amateur shutterbug. The only available aspect ratios are 16:9 and 4:3, and there is no aperture priority or exposure correction. There isn't even a macro mode to let you focus tightly on close-up objects. It selects a lot of settings automatically based on the composition of the shot.

The camera's sensitivity goes all the way up to ISO 12800, and images don't develop even a hint of graininess until ISO 1600. Contrast and shadows are excellently handled within this range.

Compact and powerful, the Sony Cyber-Shot WX Series 3D camera is worthy of a mention as a 3D digital camera of choice. It has a dedicated 3D setting on its mode dial, making it quick and easy to take a 3D photograph when the opportunity presents itself.
