VERDICT / The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX30 is a durable camera that operates well in extreme conditions. It is waterproof and freeze proof, so you can take it places other cameras can’t go.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX30 is a versatile camera that is waterproof down to 33 feet and freeze proof down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit. This camera has all of the features you expect in the best waterproof cameras. It has an impressive 18.2-megapixel sensor which is one of the highest in its class. More pixels contribute to a higher image quality.

This waterproof digital camera comes with a 5X optical zoom, image stabilizer and anti-motion-blur setting for capturing action shots. Its CMOS sensor and built-in flash allow you to use it in the dark and low light.

We are impressed with Sony’s macro mode that allows you to get up to 1 centimeter away from your subject. The lens is equipped with two LED lights so you can capture minute details that are not visible to the naked eye. It comes in handy for shooting tiny subjects, including flowers and snowflakes.

The LCD touchscreen allows you to navigate your menu with the touch of a finger. To adjust settings or view photos, simply tap the display screen. You can customize the functions that you use the most, so they appear where you want on the screen. Be aware that the touchscreen does not operate under water, so you will want to make adjustments before submerging the camera.

The dual recording feature is another aspect that sets this camera apart from the competition. This allows you to take still shots and motion video at the same time. It also comes with a program mode that allows you to take photos in quick succession.

The multitude of picture effects is impressive and includes watercolor, monochrome, and illustration. Panorama and landscape modes are available as well. You will get a white balance mode, red-eye reduction and a self-timer. In-camera photo editing is available for perfecting close ups. Although this camera has many of the elements found in other waterproof cameras in its price range, it is not equipped with an internal GPS.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX30 runs on a rechargeable Li-ion battery. Just plug it in using the included USB cable to charge it. You can expect between 150 to 200 photos on one charge. There is no internal memory, so you will need to purchase a memory card.

This stylish camera has an ultra-thin design that is available in four colors. Measuring 5/8 of an inch thin and weighing 4.9 ounces, the camera is portable and easy to carry. The casing is made of hard plastic and metal. The back of the camera has a panel with a coarse surface which makes it easy to grip when it gets wet. In spite of its rugged surface, it is small and easy to lose, so take precautionary measures and strap it your wrist. It does not float, so if you drop it in a lake it will sink straight to the bottom.

This waterproof camera has many great features, including the macro mode for capturing small subjects and an ability to take photos and moving video simultaneously. While it does not have the built-in GPS that many outdoor enthusiasts appreciate, we are impressed with this camera’s responsive touchscreen for viewing photos and menu navigation. You’ll find almost everything you need with the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX30.
