Canon PowerShot SX620 HS Review

PROS / This camera has good image quality for its price.

CONS / This camera lacks any physical exposure controls.

VERDICT / The Canon PowerShot SX620 is capable and versatile, though it doesn’t cater to those looking for more control over their images.

The Canon PowerShot SX620 HS is a moderately priced point and shoot that, rather than trying to be the best compact camera in any particular area, offers decent performance in many. Although we sometimes found ourselves wishing this camera had more in the way of physical controls, it’s important to keep in mind that this camera, at this price range, is for someone who isn’t invested in photography and just wants a camera to capture memories – not fine tune every aspect of them.

For its size and price, we were very impressed with the image quality of the SX620. It did well to combat noise in low light, bring out details in highlights and shadows, and soften colors with nice skin tones. Its resolution, at 20.2 megapixels, is right up there with the best cameras we tested. While most people will probably use this camera to produce pre-compressed JPEGs, it is capable of shooting in RAW, which gives you much more freedom when editing should you feel the itch.

It’s battery life is simply average. At 295 shots per charge, you should have enough juice for moderately heavy shooting. At any rate, extra batteries are always an option.

The SX620 is equipped with a 25x zoom. While that’s a little less than our top three picks, it’s better than almost everything else. You might begin to feel restricted at this range, but only in extreme circumstances. It’s still a great camera for shooting family events, capturing soccer games or documenting your travels.

Unfortunately, this camera offers almost no physical controls or, indeed, much manual control over your images at all. In this price range, we can understand why – most advanced users who would appreciate such control likely have more expensive cameras.

Built-in Wi-Fi is useful for transferring your images to your phone and then editing and posting them from there. With a dedicated Wi-Fi button, the SX620 is perfect for this. All you’ve got to do is turn on the Wi-Fi, connect your phone and find the photos you want using an iOS or Android application.

The Canon PowerShot SX620 HS is a great point and shoot camera for beginners and casual users. Those looking to grow their photography skills will likely be frustrated at some point by its limitations, but for casual users, it’ll be a breath of fresh air. With good image quality, Wi-Fi and a versatile lens, we think it’s an excellent choice for those seeking a capable yet simple option.
