DJI Phantom 2 Vision Review

Author by

PROS / This drone has a battery life of 25 minutes, which is as long as it gets.

CONS / The drone doesn't have a stabilization gimbal.

VERDICT / DJI's Phantom 2 Vision is easily one of the best drones available. It has excellent battery life, produces fantastic quality footage and stills and is fast and fun to fly.

The DJI Phantom 2 Vision is a fantastic drone with several appealing features, including a 1080p camera that also takes 14 megapixel stills. Its 25-minute battery lasts longer than almost every other drone in comparison. These are just two of the reasons why we bestowed upon this RC drone our Top Ten Reviews Silver Award.

Performance

This drone really zips through the skies, clocking in at a max speed of 33.5 miles per hour. It has a flight time of 25 minutes, which is twice as long as several other commercial drones on the market. Its operating range is about 1,000 feet, which is not the largest range on the market, but it's plenty for shooting stills and video. Plus, a drone is much easier to fly when it is in sight, anyway.

Some other RC drones require you to purchase a GoPro or other camera separately to attach to the body of the drone. Fortunately, the DJI drone has a built-in camera that is incredibly impressive. The camera captures high resolution photos with its 14-megapixel camera. On a clear night, lit up buildings look fantastic. The video is sharp, and the drone allows you to capture sights that you would previously only be able to see from a helicopter or from the balcony of a tall building.

Features

This quadcopter measures just 11.4 x 11.4 x 7 inches and weighs less than 3 pounds, making it portable. It is ready to fly, with the exception of requiring 4 AA batteries for the included transmitter. After getting the transmitter battery, just charge the included 5200mAh LiPo drone battery for three hours, and you are set.

There is a small learning curve with this RC drone, and you’ll want to take it easy before pushing the limits and going extremely high. Anybody can learn to fly the DJI drone, but it isn’t suited for beginners and is a geared more toward professionals. It can serve a variety of needs, like a realtor wanting to shoot some aerial footage of a home, a journalist who wants footage of crowds or a surfer that wants an incredible perspective on the waves. No matter who you are, you’ll want to read up on the drone, analyze the included instruction manual and watch videos online before takeoff.

The built-in GPS helps keeps your Phantom 2 drone steady while it shoots; however, since it doesn’t have a stabilization gimbal, the pictures won’t come out clear every time, and video can sometimes be shaky, especially if you are dealing with wind. One huge advantage this drone has over others is it uses a first-person view, meaning you can see what the drone’s camera sees live using your smartphone or tablet display. This is possible through DJI’s Vision App, which is free and runs on your iOS or Android device. The UAV offers flight planning and has a return-to-home setting. Both are sure to come in handy.

Accessories & Supplies

The DJI Phantom 2 Vision is an all-in-one package that is much more cost effective than building your own RC drone. Included is a transmitter, range extender, four propellers, a clip to attach your smartphone, a 4GB memory card and all the charging cables you need. The only drawback is that the transmitter battery uses 4 AA batteries rather than having a rechargeable battery, so you’ll have to keep replacing them.

Help & Support

DJI offers a one-year warranty on its Phantom drones. This is much longer than other drone warranties in the industry. However, the warranty is slightly confusing because each part of the drone has a specific duration of coverage. For instance, the motor and battery are only covered for three months, while some other parts are covered for a year. Also, if you crash your drone, DJI is not accountable and the damage won’t be covered under warranty. If something malfunctions or you need extra help, you can reach out to DJI by telephone, email or online chat. The manual, the app, updates and software are available for download online.

Summary

The DJI Phantom 2 Vision will turn heads in two ways: when people see it fly effortlessly through the sky, and when people see the incredible footage after your flights. It has almost everything you need, with the exception of batteries for the transmitter. Its lack of stabilizing gimbal means the footage won't always be crystal clear, but all in all, it will not disappoint.
