Verdict / The P3 Pico Projector offers a good picture for its size and is truly lightweight and portable.

Editor's note: A newer version of this product, the AAXA P3-X Pico Projector, is available. The manufacturer lists the new version as offering the following features: a higher resolution; longer battery life; and the ability to produce 70 Lumens of LED brightness. We will evaluate, rank and review the new version of this product when we next update the Budget Micro Projectors reviews.

The P3 Pico Projector from AAXA Technologies may be pocket-sized but this micro projector makes a big impression. Our Top Ten Reviews Silver Award winner offers a good picture for its price and most of the features we were looking for in a very portable package.

One thing that is not small on the P3 is the potential screen size – up to 80 inches. That is not even close to the largest in our lineup but that’s impressive coming from a projector of this size. The 50 lumens of brightness also look like much more than what we expected. It does not offer as good a display as some we tested but it was very good, with vivid colors, even in a room with some ambient light.

This unit makes it easier to arrive at its best possible picture too. The focus lever was the easiest to use of the budget micro projectors we tested. The focus tool on other units made it difficult to get a sharp picture but the lever design on the P3 made it very easy.

This projector’s petite proportions cannot be overemphasized. It does not even weigh a whole pound and it is only 4.6 inches long, shorter than the average pen. This will greatly add to portability. Stick this in a purse or carry-on bag and take it on vacation with ease. Throw it in a briefcase for a quick work presentation. Use it as the television in your bedroom and get a large screen effect without taking up valuable wall space. The P3 can easily go anywhere.

Even though it is small this unit packs in a lot of features that make it easy to use. We were impressed to see a remote control included for such a small projector and we love the included tripod. The legs are strong but still easy to manipulate. One thing that is not small is the amount of noise we got from this projector’s fan. It was nothing obnoxious, just more than we expected to hear. With a little 1-watt speaker you will be glad there is an easy audio output so you can connect to better speakers.

More battery life would really add to this projector. It only lasts about 65 minutes, not nearly enough for a movie. But we assume you will be able to keep it plugged in for many uses, and 65 minutes will be enough time for many presentations, gaming and other uses.

The only thing missing in the connections department is an SD card reader, though we can’t really fault designers for that – there would not likely be any room for it. There is a USB port, composite AV, VGA and HDMI connection so you will be able to connect easily with laptops, a USB stick, iPods, gaming devices and more. We like that AAXA includes so many of the cables you will need too so you don’t have to buy them to make this unit work with most devices.

Ease of Use

Aside from a short battery life this unit is incredibly easy to use. We had it out of the box and projecting great-looking images in less than a minute. It stays nice and cool while it is running and the controls were very straightforward.

Help & Support

AAXA treats customers right with a one-year warranty and an excellent and informative website. We like that all of the manuals are available for download and easy to find. For questions not answered there you can contact them via email or phone and expect fast and courteous responses.

Finding the best mobile projector means knowing your must-haves. If long battery life is one of them this projector might not work for you. But at this size and price we were pretty impressed it had battery power at all. The picture is very nice and this unit is compatible with a wide range of devices. The P3 is proof that good things can come in small packages.
