Sony LED EX620

When it comes to defining a category, we find few products that do so as clearly as the Sony LED EX620 does for internet TVs. This smart TV has the most apps, highest specs and best peripherals of any device on our side-by-side comparison chart. There was no question in our minds who would receive the TopTenREVIEWS Gold Award for smart TVs.

This smart TV has all the apps we rank for in this category and more. In fact, it has the most app-based functionality of any smart TV we reviewed. For starters, it has a wide array of video apps, so you can watch internet content from the most popular online sources. Online video apps include Video Unlimited, Blip.tv, Dailymotion, Hulu Plus, Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Sony Pictures Television, Cinemanow, SnagFilms and, of course, YouTube. We had a hard time thinking of any mainstream video site that is not included on this list.

The apps that come preinstalled on the Sony LED EX620 aren't limited to video. It also has a wide selection of music-streaming apps. You have the ability to listen to your favorite tunes through services such as Pandora, Singingfool, Music Unlimited and more.

Further still in the apps department, you'll find photo-sharing apps from popular brands such as Picasa, Shutterfly and Photobucket. These services allow you to access the pictures you have stored online and browse your friends as well, right from your TV.

If you're a sports buff, you'll love the professional and college league apps the Sony LED EX620 has to offer. Out of the box, this smart TV comes equipped with apps such as Golflink.com, NHL Vault and College Sports.

One last thing to mention before we move out of the apps section; the Skype app for the Sony LED EX620 allows you to turn your smart TV into a video-phone device. Honestly, with this app combined with this smart TV's enormous screen, blazing refresh speed and online capabilities, you'll feel like you're on the bridge of the starship Enterprise when you use this app for video calls. It's amazing technology that only a few short years ago was the sole property of science fiction.

Display & Audio

In terms of screen size, the Sony LED EX620 is the largest smart TV on our side-by-side comparison chart, measuring 54.6 inches diagonally. The screen displays full 1080p HD resolution. That's the standard resolution for smart TVs in this class. It is the best that's out there, but that resolution is nothing special these days. If it were anything less, we would be scratching our heads, and it wouldn't even appear on our lineup.

Sony includes a few image-enhancement features on LED EX620. The first of which is Edge LED Backlighting. This technology enhances both the picture quality and the contrast. The result is a sharper image and a crisper picture. This backlighting technique also allows Sony to reduce the width of the set for a slimmer, lighter and better-looking smart TV.

Next up is Sony's Motionflow 120 technology. This feature effectively doubles the frame rate at which it displays images from the standard 60 to 120 frames per second. More frames per second (fps) equals a clearer picture. Therefore, when you enable Motionflow 120, you get a picture that is twice as clear.

We should note that this enhanced frame rate is primarily useful for watching TV shows. If you're watching a Hollywood Movie, Sony gives you the ability to set the frame rate to 24 fps. All movie theaters run films at this rate, so it makes sense that you have this ability because it gives movies you watch at home a more cinematic feel.

Further still in the image enhancement department, we find Sony's trademarked X-Reality Engine. This feature analyses each scene this smart TV displays in real time. It automatically adjusts its settings to optimize the picture quality of every scene you watch. It does this so fast that you don't even know it's happening. This is particularly useful when the picture suddenly switches from a very dark scene to a bright scene.

Another feature we liked in the Sony LED EX620 is its presence sensor. Everyone has experienced the situation where you leave the room with the TV running, get distracted and don't return to turn it off. The presence sensor constantly scans the room this smart TV is placed in. If there is no movement in the room for a certain period of time, this smart TV will automatically switch into a power saving mode.

There is a downloadable app that greatly increases this smart TV's functionality. The Media Remote app is available for both the iPhone and Android smartphones. This app allows you to use your phone not only as a remote control, but also as a media browser. All the media you have loaded onto your phone or in the cloud is accessible through this app and integrates seamlessly with the other apps installed on this internet-connected TV.

Sony also has a number of peripherals available for the Sony LED EX620. You have to pay extra for them; however, we feel that if you're willing to shell out the cash, these devices take this smart TV to the next level.

Chief among the add-ons is the Sony Tablet S. Think of it as an iPad that ties all the electronics in your house together. This device runs the android operating system and has the ability to control your smart TV, Sony Entertainment Network, PlayStation and more.

It has all the functionality you've come to expect from tablets, such as web browsing, social networking, picture taking, video chatting and much more. The advantage this has over some of the competition is that it ties all the electronics in your house together for a seamless experience.

The only problem with the Sony Tablet S is that it comes with a hefty price tag of more than $400. Granted, that's less than an iPad, but Sony just doesn't have the presence in the tablet market to draw customers away from Apple.

Another peripheral that Sony offers for this smart TV is the camera and microphone for Skype. The afore-mentioned reference to the Enterprise is impossible without this add-on. It will run you about $150, but if you're into video calling on a Galaxy Class level, it's worth it.

Help & Support

Sony didn't become the behemoth that it is by treating its customers like dirt. As it does for all its products, Sony offers top-of-the-line technical support for the LED EX620. You can contact the company by phone, email or live chat. Sony also provides a massive knowledgebase and FAQ that can help you with your problems without ever having to speak with a customer service representative.

The company also offers a standard one-year warranty on the Sony LED EX620.

At the end of the day, there is nothing about the Sony LED EX620 that we don't like. It's big, beautiful, sharp and has an overwhelming number of features – so many, in fact, that most users will never realize the TV's full potential. The closest thing we have to a complaint is that some of the extra features carry a hefty price tag. However, we can't realistically expect Sony to give away tablets.
