The Maytag MSS25N4MKZ is a sleek looking fridge that rivals even some of the best side by side refrigerators due to its great value for money. Unlike French door refrigerators, this type of fridge features full-length fridge and freezer compartments, making it an ideal choice for family homes or those that just want a clear view of everything they have in.

Made in the USA, this Maytag is cheaper than some of the other options we reviewed but it’s also lacking in a few key areas too. Those areas include the absence of an ice maker, and also that this refrigerator isn’t Energy Star certified. To find out all the pros and cons, read our full review below.

Maytag MSS25N4MKZ: What you need to know

The Maytag MSS25N4MKZ is a 25 cubic-feet refrigerator, which is around average for this type of appliance. Finished in fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, the Maytag looks modern and stylish and it features two bar-style handles on the front of its doors. This type of coating is a great choice if you’ve got young children who like to put their hands all over the doors.

Looking at it from the outside, you’ll notice there’s no ice and water dispenser. For some this is a game changer and will be a major downfall but if you’re not too worried, it’s actually a good way to save money on this type of fridge. Another element that brings the cost down on this model is the fact that it’s not Energy Star certified. This too is a disappointment as it means you won’t be able to expect as low running costs as you would with an Energy Star certified model.

Maytag MSS25N4MKZ: Features

Just because this isn’t the most expensive fridge we’ve reviewed, that doesn’t mean it’s lacking in features. Inside, the fridge doors have adjustable gallon door bins which free up space on the shelves of this appliance.

A humidity-controlled crisper drawer is also included for keeping fruits and veggies as fresh for as long as possible. There are four refrigerator shelves that are made of glass and even simple things like the hinges on this unit have been built to last.

Because this Maytag refrigerator doesn’t have an ice maker, this actually makes more space inside the freezer for storing food. The freezer also features door shelving, and open shelving so that you can find everything you’re looking for with ease. This layout is one of the main advantages of having a side-by-side refrigerator as it means you don’t have to look through freezer drawers or bend over to find what you need as you do with chest freezer models. It’s worth noting, however, that some extra large frozen pizzas may struggle to fit in this freezer due to their width.

Inside the Maytag MSS25N4MKZ, there are energy-efficient LED light bulbs to light up your food and drink. These give off less heat than traditional bulbs and are supposed to last a lot longer too.

This Maytag refrigerator isn’t smart-enabled so you won’t be able to control it via your smartphone, but the lack of smart features also helps keeps the cost down on this model. This refrigerator also only comes in one color, so if you’re not keen on the stainless steel look, you might want to consider another option such as the GE GSS25GSHSS.

Because this refrigerator doesn’t have an ice and water dispenser you won’t have to worry about getting it plumbed in. You can buy an ice maker separately if that’s important to you, though. However, to make installation easier, this fridge is fitted with wheels at the front and the handles can be removed if you need to fit it through a tight doorway.

The freezer on this model also features auto-defrost, and the fridge has been designed to be used in rooms with a minimum temperature of 55 degrees Fahrenheit, so this will help you decipher whether it’s suitable for storing in a garage or not.

Maytag MSS25N4MKZ: Price & warranty

The RRP of the Maytag MSS25N4MKZ is $1,299. That makes it an affordable side-by-side refrigerator model, and our price comparison software below will show you today’s best deals for it at various online retailers.

It's slightly more pricey than our budget pick, the Samsung RS25J500DSR/AA, and the Samsung model also offers a slightly larger capacity. If you want a refrigerator that is Energy Star certified you do have to be prepared to pay slightly more, but you should save money on your energy bills in return.

In terms of warranty, the Maytag MSS25N4MKZ’s compressor is covered by a 10-year warranty which is pretty impressive.

Maytag MSS25N4MKZ: User reviews

The Maytag MSS25N4MKZ has an average score of 4.7 out of five on Home Depot. Users praise the fingerprint-resistant coating on this model and also comment on how quietly it operates. There are some criticisms that state the “freezer racks are cheap”. Some users also mention that the drawers are “flimsy”, and the door swings wide open as it doesn’t have a “stop point”. There are hundreds of five-star reviews, however. Users claim that this fridge is spacious and the lack of ice maker is actually a real benefit to the internal space.

Should you buy the Maytag MSS25N4MKZ?

The Maytag MSS25N4MKZ isn’t the largest side by side refrigerator on the market, but it’s also not the most expensive. It offers bright lighting, lots of storage space, a fingerprint-resistant coating, and adjustable door bins. All of these factors make it good value for money. If you’d rather have smart features and an ice maker though, we’d recommend considering an alternative option.
