Editor's note: On May 2, 2016, ADT announced the completion of a merger with Protection 1. Although the two companies currently operate independently, both will eventually operate exclusively under the ADT brand. When ADT and Protection 1 complete this brand integration, we will update our home security reviews to reflect that information.
Protection 1 is a national security service that provides four different security system plans for homes, businesses and multi-family dwellings. This home security company offers wireless, cellular-based residential security alarm systems. Each security system package from Protection 1 includes a touchscreen control panel, three door and window sensors, a motion detector, a yard sign, three window decals, and a keychain remote.
If you choose the basic plan, you have to pay extra for fire and carbon monoxide sensors. You can also pick from a selection add-on equipment for an extra cost to customize your home's security. These add-ons include panic buttons, glass-break sensors, security cameras and garage door sensors. Unfortunately, Protection 1 does not offer dedicated sirens or recessed door sensors.
The Secure + plan, an intermediate level home alarm package, includes everything in the basic package as well as a two-way voice connection through an intercom in the control panel that lets you can speak directly to a Protection 1 representative if something is amiss in your home. It is uncommon to see a home security company that includes this function in anything but a top security system. This can be helpful if you have elderly family members or live alone since response times are fast and you can get help immediately.
If you opt for the more advanced plans, you can make use of mobile features like text or email alerts and system control through your Android or iOS device. Protection 1's most advanced home security system provides video surveillance you can access with the app. The advanced plan also has home automation features that let you control your lights and thermostat.
Protection 1's equipment is covered by a three-year warranty and must be installed by one of the company's technicians or else you void the warranty. If you already have existing home security equipment, Protection 1 may be able to take over home monitoring using your current equipment. Signing up with Protection 1 involves a three-year contract. If you cancel the agreement before then, you're responsible for paying the full amount you agreed to pay originally.
Protection 1's customer service is first-rate. You can reach the company through email, phone or live chat. In our experience with Protection 1, reps were courteous, friendly and well informed. Although they were eager for a sale, we did not get a sense that we were submitting to a hard sell. All of the company's licensed employees must undergo a background check. You can find online tutorials, FAQs and articles that not only teach you how to use the security system but also about such things as emergency preparedness, tips for keeping seniors safe at home and more.
Protection 1 has great customer service, many methods of communication in the event of emergency, a healthy selection of home security equipment and information that goes beyond their company's interests to keep you and your loved ones safe. It can warn you about significant threats like intrusion, fire and carbon monoxide, and can take over existing equipment if needed. You are bound to pay for your three-year contract in full, but Protection 1 presents great choices for a residential security alarm system.
