Costco may not be the first name that springs to mind when it comes to the cheapest online check ordering services, yet it is a market in which the bulk buy specialist - and its deep discounts - can most definitely be found.

Perhaps surprisingly, Costco offers a wide range of check designs, covering everything from animals through to images that reflect more "inspirational and cause related" themes. Less surprising will be the low prices that can be found, although you will, of course, be expected to buy quite a few checks in order to get that price down.

Costco Check Service review: Features

Costco has most bases covered in terms of its online check ordering service, with personal checks and business checks both available online. The design options are wide and varied too, with popular animated characters such as Batman and Scooby-Doo vying for attention next to dog breeds and images depicting rather more patriotic scenes. Meanwhile, Costco business checks come in several sleek designs and are available in manual, computer and high-security formats.

While popular customization options such as photo checks or logos are missing, a degree of personalization is still possible on the stock designs. Custom font styles are available, and there is the option to add a personal message in the blank space above your checks signature line too.

Costco's online check ordering service provides all of the accessories you need to keep track of spending and paying bills with your checkbook as well, including deposit tickets, binders and checkbook covers.

Costco Check Service review: Security

As you would hope, all Costco custom checks have built-in security features aimed at countering the threat of fraud and identity theft. For those who want maximum protection, high security personal checks are available for both personal and business customers. These checks have additional features including heat reactive ink, fluorescent fibers, holograms, watermarks, among many others.

Costco Check Service review: Service

The Costco website is straightforward and shouldn't pose a challenge to anyone, although Costco customer service agents can be contacted by email, phone and mail, if you so wish. There is a handy quick reorder option available for repeat buyers too.

When it comes to computer checks and their compatibility with your equipment, there is a simple online form that should be completed to guide you in the right direction. Just choose your printer (laser or ink jet), select your software, and you'll find printed checks and forms for Quicken, QuickBooks, Peachtree, Profit, Intuit, and more.

Of course, the big deal with Costco is that you have to buy in bulk, and you must place an order for a minimum of two boxes. However, if you know you're going to use the 200 or so checks that this will provide, this is unlikely to put prospective buyers off.

Should you use Costco Check Service?

Costco has a good selection of checks that should suit most and an accessible website that is easy to use. Both personal and business customers are well catered for, and the security aspect is well covered too. That said, the lack of photo checks might deter some, while businesses could be disappointed that they can't furnish their checks with their own logo.

The other main consideration is whether you really need - or want - to buy so many checks at one time. If you're sure you won't get bored of seeing Tweety Pie every time you have to sign a check, then I guess it won't be a problem.
