Drbill - BitDefender antivirus is a great anti virus solution that is top rated on TopTenREVIEWS and it does work with Windows 98. If you download this PDF from BitDefender: http://download.bitdefender.com/resources/files/Download/no/bitdefender_av_v10_guide.pdf Then search for Windows 98, you'll see that Windows 98 is in the minimum system requirements list.

As a tech, I would highly recommend upgrading to at least Windows XP. Windows XP, though getting harder to purchase, runs on 300Mhz processors with at least 128MB of RAM, and if you have at least a 4GB hard drive, you will be able to install it. Then you will be a lot safer on the internet. Win 98 long ago reached its end of life. However, so has Windows XP, but support is still avaliable for XP, unlike windows 98.

I haven't used 98 in years. I would agree that if you are able to upgrade then do so. Like Marc said, with an OS that old you'll have a hard time finding new software that supports 98. I use BitDefender on most of my machines and it works great. I do have a few that use Avast and haven't had any viruses.

I second Jdawg's response. Get XP, get all the security updates, then worry about AV software. When I used win98 I had to reinstall everything every few months. Not so with XP!

I know for sure BitDefender still has a version for windows 98 but I can not confirm if Avast does. I have been using BitDefender on my person computer for the last couple years and since I stated using it, I have had no problems (as far as virus/spyware is concerned) However at this point in time, in running a computer that is as old as yours you are going to start having a hard time finding much of any software that is still compatible with Windows 98. It maybe time to start thinking about upgrading your system to Windows XP or something newer.

I know from experience that if you contact Herman Street and ask for an older version of BitDefender, they will give it to you. I had to get a copy of it for my computer that operates on Window's 2000. They were very helpful with it.
