PROS / The age and mileage restrictions are liberal: 10 years old and 115,000 miles.
CONS / Coverage is only available to military members.
VERDICT / USAA offers excellent extended warranty coverage for military members.
As with most USAA benefits and services, the extended car warranty is excellent, but it is only available to members of the armed forces. This is the main reason it fell lower on our ranking. But if you are active military, former military or an eligible family member, this company is worth considering for your extended warranty coverage because it’s available nationwide and offers everything you’d want in an extended car warranty.
Although we were able to obtain a quote from USAA for extended car warranty coverage, it wasn’t easy because it’s only available for military members and their family members. However, the service offers two different plans – Manufacturer Wrap Protection and Comprehensive Protection.
Manufacturer Wrap Protection is available if you have more than one month and 1,000 miles left on your basic manufacturer warranty. It takes over after your manufacturer warranty ends, and it ends the same time your manufacturer powertrain warranty is up.
The Comprehensive Protection is available for USAA members with vehicles up to 10 years old and with less than 115,000 miles. This coverage extends beyond the basic manufacturer warranty on your car for as long as you’d like it.
We were very impressed with the rental car coverage USAA offers its members. If your car is in the repair shop and you need a rental car, USAA will reimburse you up to $50 per day, and it doesn’t limit you on the number of days like most companies do.
USAA offers payment plans up to 18 months, and there is a 60-day money-back guarantee if you decide you don’t want the policy coverage, which is the longest money-back offer of any extended warranty company we reviewed.
Having spoken with USAA's customer service representatives, we found them helpful and courteous. The service is lacking 24/7 customer support or a live chat option, which is generally the most convenient way to speak with a customer service representative. You can, however, contact the company by phone and email, and USAA offers a handful of very helpful frequently asked questions for customers or potential customers on its website.
If you’re in the military and interested in an extended car warranty for your vehicle, USAA is one you should consider. It offers multiple plans, and along with all the standard features an extended car warranty should have, it offers features that exceed most services, such as lengthy rental car reimbursement and a money-back guarantee.
