PROS / This company offers many different games and has an appealing web site.
CONS / We got no response to repeated emails.
VERDICT / This firm has excellent and varied games, but is lacking in customer support.
Night of Mystery presents an admirably wide-ranging number of mystery games, both murder mystery games and the non-murder variety as well. It also offers you a detailed and well-appointed web site that gives you great party tips for your murder mystery party. However, we were disappointed in the company’s customer service since several efforts to make email contact with the firm brought no response. Approximately 45 days after the first contact, we did receive an email response and an explanation that a computer "glitch" had caused some communication problems.
The games are attractive, the variety is excellent and the web site highly informative, but we regretfully gave a low ranking to this company because our experience with the customer service was so dismal.
Among its many games, the company provides one especially fun murder mystery set in Hollywood, “Lights! Camera! MURDER!” The setting alone permits you to really let loose all the creativity you have. You can roll out a “red carpet” for your guests to stroll while getting their pictures taken, encourage your guests to deck themselves out in lively costumes, jewelry and make-up, and supply fun props that simply scream “Hollywood.” You also can follow the web site’s party tips for ways enjoy all the glitz and glamour of Tinsel town without spending too much.
The plot revolves around an A-list party that takes place after the Academy Awards. Someone very important – in a town where importance is everything and that produces enemies you would not believe – ends up dead.
The rest of the characters scurry to find out who did it. In the meantime, your guests must try to conceal some of their character’s not-so-nice secrets and avoid disasters that could destroy their livelihoods and personal lives, all the while sleuthing to find the killer. This site offers many games, but there are no boxed sets.
Night of Mystery offers several murder mystery games, including those aimed at adults. It also provides clean versions for more sedate groups and games suitable for teenagers that do not make any references to drugs, liquor or illicit love affairs. However, there are no games for children. There also are games geared toward all-female gatherings. In addition, the company sells non-murder mysteries for groups that might find a game involving a slaying unpalatable.
The games include invitations that you can customize, and when you send them, you also can include background information about the recipient’s character as well as a guest list. However, there are no electronic invitations.
You get extremely helpful answers in the FAQs section, including such things as how you can handle more or fewer guests than you anticipated, what to do if you are throwing a murder mystery party for the first time and more. In addition, you can see each game’s plot outline and cast, and you can get party suggestions. You can also read testimonials from satisfied customers and see pictures of their festivities. There also is a customer support phone line that is for technical help only. As mentioned above, our efforts to contact the company by email were unsuccessful until much later. Unfortunately, the only direct contact method for the company, other than tech support, is through email. There are no forums, blogs or live chat.
We really wanted this murder mystery company to do better. However, the serious communication problems posed by the company's computer troubles were disheartening and we hope these improve since the company's website shows such appealing games. Communication issues aside, the party ideas for Night of Mystery are solid and smart, and you will no doubt appreciate the links to other firms that sell costumes, accessories, decorations and much more.
