PROS / Puretracks has over 3 million songs and offers DRM-free MP3s.
CONS / The songs cost more here than at the leading sites.
VERDICT / While you may pay a bit more for songs, Puretracks has a growing library and the latest hits in DRM-free format.
Puretracks is just your average run-of-the-mill music download site. They have more than one million songs offered in WMA and MP3 formats. Artists include Jay-Z, Bruce Springsteen, Jennifer Lopez, Jimmy Eat World and more. Originally a Canadian site, Puretracks now offers music downloads to the United States. They have 11 genres of music, each genre with several sub-genres to help you narrow your search. You can also search for songs using the search box and filter by artist, album and track.
Most of Puretrack’s music download selections are in WMA format, which means they are only compatible with PlaysForSure devices like Creative Zen and SanDisk. However, they also offer a selection of MP3 songs that do not include a DRM restriction and work with almost all portable players including iPod and Zune. Each song is clearly listed if offered in both formats. All formats cost $.99, unlike similar sites and MP3’s are not more expensive.
We were equally impressed with the level of customer service we experienced. Although Puretracks only includes a user manual and email address for support, we were pleasantly surprised when our email was answered in less than 15 minutes.
You can navigate each album’s page using the tabs. The most helpful tabs include “Albums by this Artist” and “Influences” to help you find similar music. The most disappointing aspect of Puretracks is they only have about 1.3 million songs and many of the albums did not include biographies.
In the future, we’d like to see Puretracks step it up a notch and offer more music and more complete artist and album information.
