Game Mine Review

Author by

PROS / Gamemine keeps making improvements to their service adding extra features like improved searching and game reviews. Their 2x Speed shipping is exactly what true gamers are looking for.

CONS / If you don't have 2x Speed shipping you might have some lag time. Their game library is too small to compete with GameFly and Gamerang.

VERDICT / : If you can deal with fewer game choices and an aged website (soon to be replaced), you will be rewarded with first-rate features and fast shipping.

Game Mine

The last time we reviewed Gamemine, we gave them a lower place ranking in our online video game rental category. We have moved them up because while some other services have become stagnant, this service keeps striving to bring improvements to their service. What separates them from the top two spots is mostly video game selection; both GameFly and Gamerang have over 6500 video game titles while Gamemine has only around 4000.

Service Features

Gamemine offers the same basic features you can expect with online game rental services like free shipping and no due dates. They also have some features that are not as commonplace; they are one of two services we reviewed (GameFly being the other) that include parental controls. After 90 days of membership, you are eligible for one of the best features the service offers - their 2x Speed delivery. This enhanced delivery option enables you to notify Gamemine when you have mailed a game back to them. They will then send you the next game on your list before they receive the returned game to the warehouse. This should speed up delivery considerably and keep the games coming without interruption.

They also offer delivery tracking and they don't bill you until the day your first game arrives, not the day you order it.

The last time we reviewed Gamemine, they didn't have game reviews. They also didn't have Gamecube games, gift certificates available for purchase or as many search features. They have now added all these features and more. They have also expressed that they will be completely reinventing their website and expanding their service offerings. Depending on when you read this, you might want to check out their site to see if they are wearing a fresh new layer of pixels.

Video Game Selection

This is the area where Gamemine really lets us down. If they want to catch up with their competitors, they will have to offer their customers more than just the most popular games. Gamers want a selection that will keep their check lists full so they can continually try new games that will keep their fingers moving and their postal carriers moving even faster.

On a brighter note, this service does have a fine selection of PSP Movies. They include a good variety of old and new films offered by Sony, including a few comedy specials and television shows like Chris Rock and Da Ali G show.

Search Capabilities

Searching for games at Gamemine should be a snap. The site organizes games by system, title, alphabetical order, release date, genre, ESRB rating or publisher. You can also see lists of which games are most popular and which games are coming soon. However, only some of these search menus actually work. We would like to see them utilize the search framework they have created on their site. If they did, the site would be much more useful to members.

Help & Support

Gamemine has more support features than any of the other services we reviewed in this category. As a member your customer support options are phone support, a FAQ list, email support or live support via chat.

The only disadvantage of Gamemine's customer service is that representatives are only there to help you in person (chat and phone support) four hours per day and only on weekdays. We found that they can be very responsive when they're available, but the limited hours can be hard to work around.

Gamemine is a good option for renting video games online because of their 2x shipping and their variety of rental plans. If they increased the size of their game library and made their site fully functional to match GameFly and Gamerang, we could recommend them even more highly.
