Bookstand Publishing has a number of things to offer an aspiring writing who is investigating publishing companies. However, its basic package will work only if you are willing to undertake promotion and marketing efforts yourself. If you need or want help with marketing, Bookstand has services to assist you, but for an extra cost.
Authors who opt for the company's basic trade book publishing package get a few good basic services and generous royalties if their manuscript has fewer than 200 pages.
Bookstand Publishing offers a handsome total publishing timeframe of approximately five weeks. This service also offers royalty rates of 30 percent of the cover price on books sold directly through their onsite bookstore and between 10 to 15 percent of the cover price on books sold through third-party retailers.
There is, however, the drawback of an extra fee if your book's page count is higher. There also are additional costs for a number of other services beyond the basic publishing package that some authors most likely would want.
Bookstand is generous with its author copies, providing an unheard of 48 free copies to its writers. This is in stark contrast to other online publishing houses that give their authors as few as one book and perhaps six at most.
Bookstand’s basic trade publishing package for a 200-page work includes the assignment of an ISBN number, a barcode, unlimited photos and other images, and a full- color cover. You also get eBook formatting and a PDF eBook if you choose to publish electronically, along with a webpage on the company's online store. Bookstand Publishing also gives you a 10-step marketing plan that you can use to get your book into readers' hands.
Bookstand Publishing has 1,000 titles in print, so its book selling reach is not enormous, even though the company has excellent book selling outlet agreements. It uses Ingram Book Group and Baker & Taylor, both of which are giant book distributors. You can sell your book through Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, Borders.com, Buy.com, Powells.com, Alibris.com and Abebooks.com as well.
If you want extra services, you can pay for extras such as copyediting, a Library of Congress Control number, a targeted promotional email campaign, press release writing services, written promotional materials (postcards, bookmarks and business cards), a custom designed book cover and custom illustrations.
Bookstand also has made its move into the world of electronic publishing, which is an enormous benefit to any writer who wants to sell a written work. For an additional fee, Bookstand will provide Google and Amazon keyword search capabilities as well as create a website for you.
The company also will format your book for the Amazon Kindle for an extra cost. For an extra fee, Bookstand will create See Inside the Book capabilities for both Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com, which are highly appealing to book lovers everywhere and will most likely boost sales.
This publishing house offers email support and a FAQs section on its website. However, there are no writers' forums and we were disappointed that they do not provide a toll-free number with which to contact the company.
If you have a manuscript that will produce a book with fewer than 200 pages, like the idea of receiving plenty of free copies of your book and are skilled at promotion and marketing, Bookstand Publishing could be the publisher of choice for you.
