Editor's Note: This review has been removed from our side-by-side comparison because it no longer ranks as a top 10 product. The original review is below, but check out our current top 10 about Web Hosting services.
HostRocket has been orbiting cyberspace for over 10 years and was once a well-respected web hosting service. Unfortunately, it has lost a bit of altitude in recent years. Its pricing lacks the competitive spirit you find in our top web hosting services. Its customer service is reputedly inadequate, with slow response times and mediocre expertise. On the plus side, it does offer a huge library of apps that you can install quickly and easily, and its standard service packages feature unlimited bandwidth, disk space, email accounts and databases.
It offers a website design service that may appeal to midsize businesses looking for a custom-but-professional web front. The smallest design package includes a personal consultation and one custom webpage. The most expensive package includes eCommerce platform installation. The websites in the portfolio are sharp, modern and attractive.
This web hosting service offers site creation tools, but they're way out of the price range of most beginning aspiring web entrepreneurs. It would be helpful if the company gave you the option to create your own website rather than having to rely on it to do the work for you.
As you register for a HostRocket web hosting plan, keep a close eye on the price tag. Unlike many competitors, this web host provider charges a fee for domain registration, even if you purchase a hosting package, and it doesn't offer international domains. The domain registration fee gets dumped on top of the hosting payment, which comes in a biannual lump sum. This often comes out to be less affordable than it first appears, and although it advertises a low monthly rate, the price is only available if you pay up front. An actual month-based contract is substantially more expensive.
SSL is not included in the domain hosting basic package and must be purchased and installed separately. To obtain an SSL certificate, you need a dedicated IP, which costs an additional few dollars per month. That's not the only hidden charge you should know about. Other charges include monthly fees for 128-bit SSL certificates, remote backup, and domain registrations and transfers.
There is not an option for live chat support, so the only way to receive immediate help is over the phone. That fact, with the addition of our experience of long wait times, didn't help the experience. Even in a call to their support staff, we felt it to be largely sales-based.
Choose HostRocket if you like the websites in its portfolio and have a budget that accommodates the price. If you already have a website or plan to put one up for yourself, this web hosting service may not be the most cost-effective solution. The unlimited disk space, bandwidth, email and database are noteworthy, but you can get the same service from our top-rated web hosting providers at a lower cost.
