PROS / PowWeb provides unlimited domains and disk space to its clients.
CONS / This web hosting service makes it hard to create an account.
VERDICT / There is limited support, but that balances out with a great hosting package, making PowWeb a solid web host.
There are dozens of web hosting services on the market, and while all serve the same primary function, additional features, functionality and support can vary greatly. PowWeb is one hosting provider that falls somewhere in the middle, proving to be just average in virtually every aspect we measured, including features and technical support.
While most of the web hosting services we reviewed offer different tiers of hosting, PowWeb offers one plan, and it includes unlimited disk space, monthly bandwidth and email accounts. It would be nice if it had more features, but you can't go wrong with this basic but workable plan.
When it comes to features, PowWeb doesn’t offer any that are unique, and it lacks the advanced functionality we sought. The service’s feature set includes a site builder, shared SSL for eCommerce websites and advertising credits. It is disappointing that the service provides very little advanced functionality; it lacks custom cron jobs, a script library and a file manager.
PowWeb does provide its own control panel. As with most web hosts that don't use the industry-standard cPanel, it uses a generic version. This control panel is scaled down and only focuses on a few features that cater to beginners. The look is efficient, and it's certainly not overwhelming. However, if you plan to access extra features, you need to upgrade to a plan that uses a complete control panel rather than using a small handful of tools.
While the control panel is organized and high functioning, new users may find it overwhelming and cumbersome to navigate. Any questions that may arise while using the service can typically be answered by referencing one of the service’s many support options. You can contact a customer service rep directly via toll-free telephone, live chat or email. Signup was unnecessarily difficult, and we had to go through live chat to get an account started. Our first live chat wait time was five minutes, at which point it reset itself and cut us off. Every other attempt was over 10 minutes. The outsourced support staff had a few communication issues but eventually created the account.
Overall, PowWeb is a moderate web hosting company. It lacks some functionality, but the features that the service does provide are decent. The web hosting service would greatly benefit from the inclusion of an easier account creation process. Jumping through hoops is a sure way to lose customers before you even get them.
