PROS / The backup and restore processes are both easy to navigate.
CONS / The data compression was just average.
VERDICT / Acronis True Image 2017 is one of the best backup apps on the market because it’s very easy to use, full of advanced features and performs well.
Many data backup developers specialize in only data backup software. Acronis is also a leader in cloud storage, and its service features the same desktop app. The program is sleek and modern, and although it has a few minor learning curves, it still earned high grades for being easy to use. While the restore speed was just average, the backup speed was excellent. For these reasons, Acronis True Image earned the Top Ten Reviews Silver Award for best data backup software.
To find the best backup software, we tested each app multiple times on the same computer, using the same data. This created an apples-to-apples comparison of each app’s speed, CPU usage and data compression. We also evaluated each program’s ease of use by looking at how the app was designed, how many steps are in each process and how many options there are in each step. Ease of use is essential for a home user, and data backup software should be for everyone who wants to protect their computer against data loss.
Acronis True Image 2017 earned an A-minus for ease of use during the backup process. While there are between two and six steps to the process, they don’t have many options in them, which minimizes user error. The interface is very modern and sleek, but it uses symbols to identify the tabbed features. This is the only learning curve the app throws at a novice user, which isn’t much at all. Still, text is preferable, since you don’t have to guess the feature based on a symbol.
The backup performance was mostly average, save for the backup speed, which received an A-minus. While the CPU usage and data compression weren’t impressive, the speed was blazing. The average rate was 1.45GB per minute. At this speed, the program can back up 1TB of data in about 11.5 hours. For comparison, the fastest speed in our review was 1.53GB per minute – a difference of only about 80MB per minute.
Much like the backup process, Acronis True Image earned an A-minus for ease of use during the restore process. We counted as few as five steps to start restoring a data set. As with backing up, the only learning curve is the use of symbols over text, which is easy enough to master, even for a novice.
Also, much like the backup performance, the restore speed and CPU usage performance were average. The average restore speed in our tests was 1.05GB per minute, which isn’t much slower than the backup speed. However, the fastest restore speed in our review was more than twice as fast at 2.53GB.
Acronis True Image may be one of the easiest data backup apps on the market, but don’t mistake that for simplicity – it’s loaded with advanced features IT managers would love. You can create full-system images, clone disks and archive backups. In addition, you can sync files across your computers and back up to the cloud. Acronis even gives you 500GB of cloud storage for one year without additional costs.
You can protect your files using three levels of encryption, with 256-bit as the most secure. With these encryption options, you can adjust backup performance; high-level encryption can make your backup sets run slower, so you can encrypt only your most-sensitive files with 256-bit encryption in one backup set, then encrypt other lower-priority files with lesser encryption in other backup sets for the speediest performance.
Help & Support
With Acronis Backup for PC, you can access a variety of help and support options inside the program itself. One of the bonus inclusions is the help menu, which contains useful information arranged in an easy-to-use and logical manner. There is also an online knowledgebase of FAQs and tutorials, as well as email, phone and live chat contact information you can use to speak to someone directly, which is pretty uncommon with software developers.
Acronis True Image 2017 is among the best data backup software because it’s very easy to use and has a very fast backup speed. It also has all the advanced features you need, including cloud storage integration. While the data compression, CPU usage and restore speed are all average, this computer backup app excels where it matters most.
