Ontrack EasyRecovery 11.5 Home Review

PROS / It has powerful filtering tools to help you sort the large amount of data the software can recover.

CONS / The software misidentified some files formats in our testing.

VERDICT / Kroll Ontrack EasyRecovery Professional proved especially adept at recovering Microsoft Office files from our tests, and it was extremely fast and easy to use.

Kroll’s Ontrack EasyRecovery Professional easily placed itself among the best data recovery software brands available by finding a high percentage of the photo, document, music and video files in our tests on solid-state drive (SSD) and hard disk drive (HDD). In overall testing, Ontrack EasyRecovery Professional recovered almost all files on reformatted drives. Few other file recovery programs came close to that impressive of a recovery rate.

Ontrack EasyRecovery Professional performed above average in recovering lost files in our testing, and it did particularly well at successful document file recovery from a SSD, for example. Its file recover performance, along with its powerful and user-friendly interface, earned the application our Top Ten Reviews Silver Award for best file recovery software.

Document Recovery

We tested the software against the two major types of logical data loss – lost files and a reformatted drive – and identified several key performance benchmarks that set Ontrack EasyRecovery Professional apart from the rest. EasyRecovery worked well on our test devices for recovering lost pictures, documents and media files. As expected, it provided diminishing returns as the damage became worse.

EasyRecovery found the full 100 percent of photos in our lost files tests and 98 percent on our tests on a reformatted drive. It tested even higher with documents, tying with the best program we tested, bringing back 100 percent of documents in the lost files tests and an impressive 99 percent on the reformatted drive. For video and music files, it recovered 100 percent easily in our lost files scenario testing and a decent 96 percent on our tests of reformatted drives. However, keep in mind that 1 percent is still a lot of files missed, as 1 percent of a 1TB hard drive is 10GB, which is enough space to store plenty of photos, documents and media files.

Ease of Use

Overall, the software is easy to use and highly intuitive, which is great when you’re trying to get your precious files back and are already stressed. The most important tasks are clearly labeled and help you initiate file recovery quickly. Scan and recovery speeds for this program are, for the most part, some of the fastest on our lineup. Though fast speeds don’t guarantee a higher file recovery rate, they do mean you won’t have to spend as much time waiting for to see the scan and recovery results.

Managing the return of large data sets quickly becomes overwhelming. In one round of testing, Ontrack reported over three times the number of target files from the scanned partition, less than 40 percent of which were usable. This was among the larger returns we’ve seen in data recovery testing.

Fortunately, Ontrack has the tools for managing large data sets. This begins by letting you preview files and filter the results. The search options at the Recovery Scenario screen can also help you narrow the field of your search.

EasyRecovery Professional is extremely feature rich, which makes it easy for you to recover your lost data, but it also helps you better manage your computer’s data overall. It has a built-in hex viewer, a block diagnostic tool, and imaging and cloning tools, and it can even recover lost email. Of course, if you find yourself meeting the outer limits of the software or your own know-how, Kroll does also host a data recovery lab that proves professional recovery assistance.

Help & Support

There is a browser-based user manual built into the software. However, it is not easily searchable. Its documentation falls short in a few areas, and it doesn’t delve into advanced or highly technical recovery issues. In fact, Kroll’s documentation defers many of the advanced questions to its technical support team, which are available via live chat, email or phone.

Kroll Ontrack EasyRecovery Professional data recovery software is based on the company’s real-world lab experience. In our tests, the software performed particularly well at recovering all kinds of files. It did provide us with an abundance of other file fragments that, with a little extra technical know-how, elbow grease and a third-party hex editor, could be made into complete files. The software’s added support and an available recovery lab are also there in case you find yourself in over your head.
