Pros / The scanning mode gives a visual progress grid for IT experts to examine for damage and errors.

Cons / A severe lack of features makes this a less-than-optimal solution for many businesses.

Verdict / Secure Recovery can be a quick fix to your office’s data-loss issue but may prove less useful as a long-term solution.

Secure Recovery for Windows is the do-it-yourself software solution offered by Secure Data Recovery as a cheaper alternative to their data recovery service. While Secure Data features all the basic features you'll need for data recovery, it suffers from a lack of certain scanning and business-oriented features. It also had trouble with recovering certain document files.

As we tested Secure Recovery's scan and recovery capabilities, it was successful in fully recovering images, video and audio files for both deleted files and reformatted drives. However, the program was unable to fully recover our sample of document files, with an average of 74% files recovered after reformatting the drive.

For ease of use, we found the Secure Recovery had a very basic interface, like other programs, but it was missing some helpful features such as a pause scan option. The recovery screen has a simple file tree that allows you to select which files to recover. There is an option to save the scan results for later recovery, but it's not clear how to do it. You need to exit out of the program for the prompt to appear.

One unique aspect included as part of the scanning process is a visual grid that represents what file types and systems the scan is detecting with the hard drive partition. This layout can be useful to experts to determine how damaged the media is and how it can be fixed. While this program is only available to install on Windows, it can perform recovery on Mac-formatted hard drives.

Although Secure Recovery is compatible with most Windows servers, it lacks essential business-centric features that make it less viable as a solution for an office environment. The one version offered is single-license only; it doesn't offer any network options, nor does it provide any support for RAID. The developer does provide free updates to the software with purchase.

The program contains a basic support guide and link to the developer’s support page where you can contact support staff through live chat, email or phone. The website also features a comprehensive database and FAQs on data recovery.

Secure Recovery offers basic scanning and recovery tools to help solve your problem, though, based on our testing, its effectiveness with recovering different file types was inconsistent. With a lack of certain tools, this program may be useful for fixing a short-term problem, but it isn't a long-term solution for businesses.
