Paragon Hard Disk Manager is billed as an all-in-one solution to hard drive management and protection. As such, there is a lot more that you can do with this utility than back up data, including wipe, partition and format hard drives. However, we focused on the backup features, which are impressive. Not only is this app one of the easiest to use, but it also one of the fastest. For these reasons, Paragon Hard Disk Manager earns the Top Ten Reviews Silver Award for best Mac backup software.

To determine which Mac backup software is the best, we started by evaluating how easy each one is to use from the perspective of someone who has never used this type of app before. This evaluation included looking at the number of steps in the backup and restore processes, the number of options in each step and how well the interface guides the user from one step to the next. We also ran many rounds of tests to evaluate backup and restore speeds. In each test, we measured the average CPU usage to determine how much of a resource hog the app is.

Backup Performance

Paragon Hard Disk Manager received a B-plus for ease of use in our evaluation of the backup process. We counted as few as three steps: choosing the disk and the destination and then initiating the backup. However, there are as many as six steps, depending on the type of backup set you perform. The interface is well designed and leads you along well. The only downside is you can only back up full disks, partitions or volumes. You can’t back up individual folders only, which can be frustrating when you only want to protect your photos and documents.

The backup speed was good, earning the program a B grade in our tests. It posted an average speed of 1.49GB per minute. While this is considerably slower than the 2.33GB-per-minute speed of the program that received the highest grade, Paragon’s speed is still well above average. This is even more impressive considering the software has very little impact on CPU resources. It never used more than an average of 2.7 percent of the CPU during the backup tests, so you don’t have to worry about it slowing down your Mac.

This is also one of the few apps with a compression option, though we didn’t test this feature. It likely slows down the backup process. Still, it’s good to have the option to compress data if you need to save storage space on your external device.

Restore Performance

The restore process was one of the easiest to follow in our review. The program received an A-minus for ease of use because it has few steps and is very straight forward. You basically just choose the backup set you want to restore on the external device and then choose its destination, which is usually your Mac’s primary hard drive.

The restore speed was also good, and the app received a B grade for its average speed of 1.45GB per minute. This speed is considerably slower than the fastest restore speed clocked in our tests, which was 2.66GB per minute, but it’s still above average. The CPU usage was excellent as well, as the software never used more than 3 percent of the CPU on average.

Even though you can’t back up individual folders and files, you can restore your data on a granular level, which means you don’t have to restore everything just to get one file back.

Advanced Features

As mentioned earlier, Paragon Hard Disk Manager is much more than a Mac data backup app. As such, it is loaded with a lot of utility features that other backup apps don’t have. It has most of the advanced backup features you should look for, including hard drive cloning, bootable media backups, incremental backup schemes, scheduling and encryption. The only advanced feature it doesn’t have is integration with cloud storage.

Help & Support

Paragon’s support is excellent. The manual is available online and is written for novice users, and it can minimize learning curves. You can also access a FAQs page and view tutorials to help you master all the features. In addition, you can contact support by phone and email. The only support feature that’s missing is live chat, which isn’t a big problem because it is best used for quick answers to minor problems you can likely find answers to on the FAQs page.

Paragon Hard Disk Manager is one of the best Mac backup apps because it’s really easy to use, has above-average performance and doesn’t have a big impact on your CPU. Its ease of use grades for both the backup and restore processes are high, and while the software is fast, its small impact on CPU resources is even more impressive. In addition, this app is loaded with advanced features, making it a very versatile and powerful Mac data backup solution.
