Pros / It is very easy to use.

Cons / The CPU usage is high.

Verdict / SmartBackup is a simple backup app that’s very easy to use, but it doesn’t perform as well as the best Mac data backup apps in our review.

SmartBackup 4 is software that has all the basic tools you need to back up the data on your Mac without unnecessary filler. Because it pares down to the basics, SmartBackup is an effective Mac backup program that emphasizes simplicity and utility over complicated processes. However, it lacks the performance and advanced features of the top apps.

To determine the best Mac backup software, we tested each app on the same Mac, using the same data. We ran multiple backup and restore sets and graded the performance on a comparative scale. We also evaluated how easy each program is to use in the backup and restore phases.

SmartBackup’s best asset is how easy it is to use. The backup process received an A-minus, while the restore process received a B-plus. Much of this is due to its interface’s minimalist design. It isn’t an app that looks great on your screen, but it leaves little room for user error, which is ideal for novices.

The program’s backup speed received a C grade. It recorded an average speed of 1.08GB per minute, which is more than twice as slow as the fastest app in our tests. Still, the rate was average. It was about as fast as copying and pasting files directly to an external device.

The restore speed was much better, receiving a B-plus for restoring data at an average rate of 1.61GB per minute. Still, this is almost 1GB slower than the fastest restore speed in our tests. In addition, the restore process significantly drained our CPU resources, receiving a D with an average CPU usage of over 20 percent.

SmartBackup doesn’t have many advanced features. It boasts of having the fastest cloning tool on the market, though we didn’t test this assertion. You can also create bootable backup sets. However, the app doesn’t back up incrementally, it doesn’t have scheduling and it doesn’t integrate with cloud storage. You also can’t protect data with encryption.

Summary

SmartBackup 4 is a straightforward and simple software that makes the process of backing up your computer easy and approachable. If you're the kind of user who wants more functionality, the program's simplicity may be a drawback. But if you are on the hunt for an easy-to-use Mac backup program that can protect your data against a major crash, SmartBackup is a good choice. Just don’t expect it to perform quickly or efficiently.
