PROS / It has an exceptionally high success rate for recovering documents.
CONS / The recovery success rate for videos and music is subpar.
VERDICT / 321Soft Data Recovery for Mac has above-average recovery rates for photos and documents, but its recovery rates for video and music don't compare to the best Mac data recovery software.
Editor's Note: This review has been removed from our side-by-side comparison because it no longer ranks as a top 10 product. The original review is below, but check out our current top 10 about Mac Data Recovery Software here.
321Soft Data Recovery is Mac data recovery software that gives you a good chance of recovering photos and documents. However, its video and music recovery is just below average. The interface is average in terms of its ease of use, but the scanning and recovery are fast enough to put this unfortunate experience behind you quickly.
We performed tests that simulated the two most common data loss scenarios – lost file and reformatted drive. In the lost file tests, we recovered an average of 95 percent of the photos. In the reformatted drive tests, we recovered an average of 96 percent of the photos. These recovery rates might sound exceptional, but both are below the average photo recovery rates of the other Mac recovery apps we reviewed. Photos are the easiest file type to recover, as evidenced by the 99 and 98 percent average for the lost file and reformatted test. Considering that 1 percent of a 1TB hard drive is 10GB, the 3 to 4 percent difference is significant.
The 321Soft Data Recovery app really shines when recovering documents. In the same tests, it recovered 94 percent of lost files and 97 percent of the documents on a reformatted drive. In comparison to other Mac recovery apps, the average recovery rates for documents in these tests is 76 percent and 81 percent, respectively. So if you're desperate to recover documents, this app gives you a great chance.
Unfortunately, the video and music recovery rates in these tests weren't great. They weren't terrible either: The average recovery rate of lost media files in our review was 68 percent, and 321Soft recovered 64 percent. The average recovery rate of media files from a reformatted drive was 67 percent, and 321Soft recovered 63 percent. So while you'll certainly have a better chance of recovering video and music with one of the best Mac recovery software apps, this certainly isn't the worst app for it.
The interface earned an average B grade for the scan and recovery steps. This was due to a few additional steps to each stage. On top of that, there isn't a recovery button. You have to save the files. It took our novice user a while to figure out that you had to hit the save button to recover the data, as there was no indication that this was the next step.
321Soft Data Recovery has four scanning options. One of the options is a data wipe. This is one of the few programs with a feature that promises to securely wipe the drive. We tested this feature, which appeared to work at first. After wiping the drive, we scanned the drive again and found no data. However, when we scanned the drive with other Mac recovery software, we were able to recover almost all of the data that had been apparently wiped from the drive by this software. So if you're planning on giving your computer away to someone and you want to ensure that the recipient can't recover the previous data, you'll want to use a different data-wipe program.
With 321Soft Data Recovery, you'll have a high recovery rate with photos and documents, but you shouldn't expect the same with video and music files, with which the software's performance was slightly below average in our tests. The photo recovery rate, while still in the high 90th percentile, is also below average compared to other Mac recovery software. While the interface isn't cluttered, the ease of use still only received an average grade because of a few extra steps and the lack of a clearly labeled recovery button.
