PROS / It's very good at recovering lost photos and documents.
CONS / It only recovered an average of 32 percent of video and music files.
VERDICT / The Mac Data Recovery Guru is one of the easier Mac recovery applications to use, but the successful recovery rates don't compare to the best Mac recovery software.
Editor's Note: This review has been removed from our side-by-side comparison because it no longer ranks as a top 10 product. The original review is below, but check out our current top 10 about Mac Data Recovery Software here.
Developed by MacOSXFileRecovery.com, the Mac Data Recovery Guru is a simple, read-only Mac recovery app with an exceptionally intuitive interface and high scan and recovery speeds. In our tests, it proved to be exceptional at recovering photos, and it gives you a good chance of recovering documents. However, its video and music recovery was subpar.
We performed two tests to gauge the software's ability to recover a variety of file types in a lost file scenario and a reformatted drive scenario. The percentage of photos it recovered was the most impressive aspect of the software. It recovered photos at an average rate of 99 percent during the lost file test. With the reformatted drive test, that rate was 97 percent. It's worth noting, however, that a 1 percent difference can be the difference between thousands of photos, depending on how much data you want to recover. The best Mac recovery software recovered 100 percent of the photos in both tests. When you consider that 1 percent of a 1TB hard drive is 10GB, this difference can be huge.
The Mac Data Recovery Guru recovered documents in the lost file test at an average rate of 96 percent, which was well above average. It only recovered 85 percent of the documents during the reformatted drive test, but even this is 4 percent above average.
The biggest disappointment was the recovery rate of video and music files. In both tests, the Guru recovered only 32 percent of the media files, which is well below average. It definitely recovered music files at a higher rate than movie files. The video files that it recovered were either unplayable because the file came back as damaged or the video would play with a black screen and no audio.
In terms of the entire process, from installation to the scan to the recovery, the Guru is one of the easiest apps to use. It's read-only, which means it doesn't install to your hard drive – it only reads the hard drive. You can have it installed and scanning your drive in under five minutes, and each step is clearly labeled. Even the scan and recovery speeds are exceptional. It scanned the SSD at an average of 600GB per hour and the HDD at an average of 135GB per hour. This speed means that you'll be able to put this unfortunate experience behind you quicker.
The Mac Data Recovery Guru has one of the most intuitive interfaces in our review. The scan and recovery are exceptionally fast. In our tests, it proved to be a good option for recovering photos and documents, but not for music and videos.
