Pros / It gives you a good chance at recovering photos.

Cons / It doesn't organize the recovered files into folders according to file type.

Verdict / Cisdem DataRecovery is affordable and has a high success rate for photos, but it doesn't recover documents, video and music with great success.

Cisdem DataRecovery costs half as much as most of the Mac hard drive recovery software on the market, which makes it an excellent option if you're on a budget. It's average in terms of how fast it scans and recovers data, and the overall ease of use is nothing special. While it's good at recovering photos, it's not very good at recovering documents, videos and music. If you just need to recover photos, this is a cost-effective option.

We tested two common data loss scenarios, lost files and reformatted drive, and looked at the recovery rates for various file types. For the lost file test, Cisdem DataRecovery had an average recovery success rate of 96 percent. While a 96 percent success rate is good enough to give you confidence that you'll recover the photos you want, this recovery rate is also 4 percent below average.

It fared much better in the reformatted drive test, recovering an average of 98 percent. However, the recovery rates for photos were its best results. And even then, these recovery rates don't compare to the best Mac hard drive recovery software in our review, which recovered 99 to 100 percent in both tests.

With concern to documents and media files, Cisdem DataRecovery didn't perform nearly as well on either test. Most notably, it completely failed to recover any of the files during the lost file test. It recovered some of the documents in the reformatted drive test, but only 24 percent, which is far below the 81 percent average in our review. It was a bit better when recovering music and videos, recording a 54 percent recovery rate for the lost files test and 58 percent in the reformatted drive test. While its recovery of media files is closer to the average recovery rate in our comparison, you'll have much better success with one of the best Mac hard drive recovery software apps.

Another flaw with Cisdem DataRecovery is the ease of use. While there's nothing spectacularly difficult about the installation, scan and recovery processes, the most frustrating part of the software is the way it doesn't organize the recovered files into folders of file types. The Mac recovery app simply puts all the recovered files into one folder. You have to do the sorting yourself, which is something that other Mac hard disk recovery apps do for you automatically. If you need a specific file, you have to wade through photos, documents, music and movie files, which all seem randomly put together.

Summary

Cisdem DataRecovery is the most affordable Mac hard drive recovery software we reviewed, but the value is only present when recovering photos. It recovered photos with a success rate in the high 90th percentile, but it was among the worst in our tests at recovering documents, music and videos. Also, while the overall ease of use is average, the post-recovery organization of the files is chaotic and frustrating.
