R-Studio for Mac 4.6 Visit Site

Pros / It performs exceptionally well, with very high success rates for every file type in every test we ran.

Cons / This is not a user-friendly Mac hard drive recovery app.

Verdict / With no recovery rate below 98 percent in any of the tests we ran, there's no doubt that R-Studio for Mac is one of the best Mac hard drive recovery apps available, but the interface is too difficult for novice users.

Developed by R-Tools Technology, R-Studio for Mac is arguably the most powerful Mac hard drive recovery solution on the market, so long as you have the patience to suffer through its big learning curve. The forensic data recovery capabilities are unmatched by any of the products in our review. It features a functional hex editor, allowing you to manually patch file blocks together. While we didn't test the hex editor, if you're an advanced user, you could potentially recover partially overwritten files with it. Using just the deep scan tool in our tests, it had the most consistently high success rate for all file types, never dipping below 98 percent. In addition, the scan and recovery are very fast. The one major catch is the difficult interface. Despite this, R-Studio for Mac earned the Top Ten Reviews Silver Award for best Mac hard drive recovery software.

Our tests simulated two common data loss scenarios – lost files and reformatted drive. We ran multiple tests of each scenario on several drive types to determine the recovery rates of various file types. R-Studio for Mac recorded an exceptionally high success rate in every test we ran, and this is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what it can do.

Picture Recovery

Photos are easy to recover. This is evident in the extremely high recovery success rate that most products we reviewed had for both tests. R-Studio recovered 99 percent of the lost photos. Surprisingly, this is actually the average success rate among the products we tested. However, this is the only average recovery rate that R-Studio would record in all our tests.

R-Studio also recorded a 99 percent success rate with the reformatted drive tests, which is 1 percent above the average recovery rate in our tests. You might think that a 1 percent difference isn't much, but when you consider that 1 percent of a 1TB hard drive is 10GB, you're actually looking at the difference of thousands of recovered photos. That said, the best Mac hard drive recovery software in our review had a photo recovery rate of 100 percent on both tests.

Document Recovery

For documents, R-Studio is nearly unmatched. It rescued 100 percent of the documents during the lost files test. The average recovery rate for documents among the products we tested was 76 percent. This 24 percent difference is huge. If you're looking to recover a critical account for your business or a term paper, R-Studio for Mac gives you the best chance.

With the reformatted drive test, the success rate dropped to 98 percent. However, even this is 17 percent above the average recovery rate for documents for this test. There is only one Mac hard drive recovery software app with a higher success rate.

Video & Music Recovery

You won't find a Mac hard disk recovery solution with a better success rate when recovering lost files than R-Studio. This is evidenced by its 100 percent recovery rate of the videos and music. No other product in our review recovered all of the videos and music in the lost file test. So if you need to recover family videos or your music library, there is no better application.

The recovery rate dipped to 98 percent in the reformatted drive tests. In this test, R-Studio successfully recovered 100 percent of the music files but failed to recover several of the MP4 files. Oddly enough, the MOV files were recovered as MP4 files, most of which were playable. The unrecoverable videos appeared at first to be recovered fully, but they only played a black screen with no audio. Still, the 98 percent recovery rate is impressive considering that the average recovery rate for this test among the products in our review was 67 percent.

Ease of Use

The biggest reason why R-Studio for Mac isn't the top Mac hard drive recovery software in our review is the interface. The vast majority of people looking to recover lost data require an app that walks them through the process with as little learning curve as possible. Mac hard drive recovery software is typically only used once or twice. Users generally realize the importance of backing up data after a data loss and only need it once. As such, you don't want to navigate a needlessly complicated interface. If most Mac recovery apps have interfaces that are like sitting in the backseat of a taxi, then the interface of R-Studios is like stepping into the cockpit of a 747.

The installation process received a B, which is average. You won't experience any obstacles when installing it. It simply took our tester nearly 15 minutes. However, the scan and recover stages received a C-, and this was being generous. There is nothing to help you move from one stage of the process to the next. It took our tester over 30 minutes to figure out how to recover the data after the scan completed. The interface is convoluted and disorganized. This software has a huge learning curve, which is something you don't want to deal with when you've experienced data loss.

On a good note, we recorded very high speeds for the scan and recoveries on both the HDD and the SSD. The HDD was scanned at a rate of 110GB per hour and the SSD at a rate of 330GB per hour. In addition, it recovered data at a rate of 110GB per hour on the HDD and 160GB per hour on the SSD. It combines a high success rate with high speeds, which means that you'll be able to get past this unfortunate data loss experience quickly, so long as you can get past the difficult interface.

Help & Support

You'll find great support from R-Tools Technology for R-Studio. You'll find the user manuals on the website, which is enormous compared to Mac recovery manuals. You also have access to tutorials and articles on the website that help you get the most from the software. R-Tools is one of the few developers with a user forum on the website. The user forum is a great resource because it gives you access to experts who use this software all the time.

R-Studio for Mac is one of the best Mac hard drive recovery apps in our review. This is a product that consistently recovers all types of files.
