TopTenREVIEWS - Silver Award - Awarded for excellence in design, usability and feature set

Many of the software developers in our review only specialize in PC backup software – an app that basically copies data from your computer to an external drive. Acronis is not one of those developers. This company is a leader in the PC backup software industry and the cloud storage industry, having developed a product that seamlessly combines the two. Acronis True Image 2017 is both an excellent desktop app and an online backup service (though this is available as a subscription). The interface is sleek and modern with only a few minor learning curves, and the backup speed is great. For these reasons, this app earns the Top Ten Reviews Silver Award for best PC backup software.

We tested each PC backup app the same way. We installed the apps on the same computer and ran multiple rounds of backup and restore sets using the same data for each product. In this way, while you may experience different results on your computer, our results are comparative. We recorded the speed, average CPU usage and compression rate in every round of testing. We also evaluated the ease of us by counting the number of steps to the process, the number of options provided in each step and how well the interface directs the user. The best PC backup software should be easy enough for a novice to master quickly.

Backup Performance

Acronis True Image 2017 is one of the best-designed apps in our review and one of the easiest to use. That said, it still only received an A-minus for ease of use. While there are as few as two steps to the process, there can be as many as six steps depending on the type of backup set you're establishing. There are few options provided in these steps, which minimizes user error. The interface is clean and modern looking, but the app uses symbols without text to identify features and tabs, which leaves the user guessing what the symbols mean until they click on it. It's minor learning curve though that one can easily master.

The backup speed was excellent, receiving an A-minus in our tests with a speed of 1.45GB per minute. By comparison, the fastest PC backup app in our tests recorded an average speed of 1.53GB per minute. If applied to a 1TB backup set, Acronis would finish the backup set only an hour and a half slower than the fastest app. Conversely, the slowest app we tested would take days. So an extra hour and some change is hardly worth scoffing at. This app can back up data very fast.

The rest of the backup performance – the CPU usage and compression rates – were unimpressive. Both benchmarks were average, which means you shouldn't worry about them unless you really need to save space on your external drive or you have an older computer that lacks the CPU bandwidth to easily run this app.

Restore Performance

Similar to the backup process, Acronis True Image's restore process receive an A-minus for ease of use. The process has as few as five steps, but trying to figure out how to restore your files can be tricky at first because it's not a prioritized feature. In fact, you only see the feature at the bottom of the Backup tab. The lack of text when identifying features doesn't help. Still, once you've restored a backup set, the process is very easy to remember.

Also similar to the backup performance, the restore performance was mostly average. Only this time, the restore speed wasn't among the best in our tests. Instead, it recorded an average rate of 1.05GB per minute. By comparison, the fastest restore speed in our review was 2.53GB per minute, which is more than twice as fast. Still, the restore process is hopefully a feature you don't have to rely on all the time, so its performance is less important than the backup performance.

Advanced Features

You might assume that an app that's easy to use lacks the advanced features power users look for, but this isn't the case. Despite being one of the easiest apps in our review, Acronis True Image is loaded with advanced features that the head of an IT department would love. You can create full-system images, clone disks and archive backups. In addition, the app has a file-sync feature that allows you to set up sync folders on all your computers. You can also back up to Acronis' cloud service, which is better than backing up to an external drive because a cloud service ensures your data is off-site. Acronis even gives you 500GB of cloud storage for free for one year.

To protect your backed up files, you have three encryption options, with the 256-bit option being the highest. With multiple encryption options, you can adjust backup performance without sacrificing protection. For example, high-level encryption means your backup sets will be slower. So instead of backing up everything under the highest encryption, you can choose to only backup the most sensitive data at that level while backing up other data at a lower encryption.

Help & Support

With Acronis, you can access a variety of help and support options inside the program itself. One of the bonus inclusions is the help menu, which contains useful information arranged in an easy-to-use and logical manner. There is also an online knowledgebase of FAQs and tutorials, as well as email, phone, and live chat contact information you can use to speak to someone directly, which is pretty uncommon with software developers.

Summary

Acronis True Image 2017 is one of the best PC backup software apps available because it's very easy to use and has a very fast backup speed. It's also full of advanced features and easily integrates with Acronis' cloud backup service. While the data compression, CPU usage and restore speed are all average, this computer backup app excels where it matters most.
