Pros / This app is one of the easiest to use.
Cons / There is only one encryption option.
Verdict / AOMEI Backupper is a well-designed PC backup app that’s easy to use and performs above average in every category.
Developed by AOMEI Technology in China, Backupper’s product description, manual and marketing materials have some strange translation issues. This can be a turn off for many users, but it is actually well-designed and performed above average in every category we tested, which is why it’s among the best PC backup software.
To find the best software, we tested all of the apps multiple times on the same computer, using the same data. As such, the test results are an apples-to-apples comparison of performance. In each round of testing, we recorded the software’s speed, CPU usage and compression rate. We also evaluated how easy each program is to use by counting the number of steps in each phase, the number of options in each step and how well the interface guides the user. The best PC backup software is easy to use and performs exceptionally well.
AOMEI Backupper received an A-minus ease of use grade for both the backup and the restore processes. The interface has a very simple design that’s aimed at people with no backup experience. There are just five tabs: Home, Backup, Restore, Clone and Utilities. The features are identified with both symbols and text, so there’s no guessing. Finally, there are just four steps in each process. During our testing, there was one hiccup: the app wouldn’t back up a handful of files from our data set because the file names were too long. This wasn’t an issue with other programs we reviewed, but it was easily fixed by shortening the file names.
Backupper’s backup speed earned a B-minus grade. This means it’s above average but not by a lot. On average, it backed up data at a rate of 950MB per minute. At this speed, it would take about 17.45 hours to back up 1TB of data. In comparison, the fastest program in our tests could complete the same backup almost seven hours faster.
It was a lot faster to restore our data – the program recorded an average speed of 1.87GB per minute, which was fast enough for a B-plus grade. While nearly twice as fast as it’s backup speed, it was still significantly slower than the fastest software in our tests. For example, the fastest program could restore 1TB of data in about 6.59 hours, but it would take Backupper 8.91 hours to restore the same set. Still, this is much faster than the average restore speed in our tests.
AOMEI Backupper’s most impressive feature is its data compression rate, which received an A. In our tests, it compressed data by an average of 9.67 percent, which was the highest compression rate in our review. It may not seem like a lot, but if you’re back up 1TB of data, this program could save 96.7GB of storage space on your external drive. In comparison, most apps in our review had compression rates below 1 percent. Of course, it’s important to note that each file has a different compression potential, so you could experience better or worse results. The point of our tests is to show how each app compresses the same set of files.
One of AOMEI Backupper’s downsides is it only has a single encryption option. While it’s great that the program can even encrypt data (some programs can’t), it doesn’t let you balance your files’ security with performance. Higher encryption levels generally make for slower performance but better security and vice versa. That said, this is a minor issue.

For novice users, AOMEI Backupper is a good PC backup solution. The interface prioritizes the backup and restore processes and provides little room for user error, making it one of the easiest apps to use. While the backup and restore speeds weren’t the fastest in our review, they were above average, and the compression rate was the best in our tests. Overall, this is an excellent PC backup app.
